Anyone shooting 180's out of a 280 Remington?

I shoot a lot of 139's, 154's, 168's out of my .280 Remington with good results but I'm wanting to try some 180's for longer range on targets only.

Before I go spending a lot of money on Berger or Sierra 180's, can anyone tell me if a standard .280 Remington case has enough powder capacity to get velocities into a usable range, like at least 2800 or so?

My barrel is 26" and it is throated long enough to handle the 180's without too much bullet in the case.

I'm thinking H4831 or H1000 powder but open to suggestions on that too.

Thanks

Might get there with H-4831sc 56+gr. you will get there with RL-17 with the 180s. h-1000 does not work very well in the 280. Pm me if you need more info

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I shoot a 280 AI with 168gr Bergers over Nosler brass, 210 M Fed primers, and RL 22 57.4 grains. It chronographs at 2890 and still more than capable of banging steel at 1425 yards. I wouldn't mind giving the 180s a crack at it as well. I have more than enough case capacity to push the RL 22 without pressure issues, but I stopped short on velocity for improved accuracy. Scott

The best I could get with 180 hybrid imr 7828 2670 fps very accurate H4831 was around 2600 fps still accurate. never shot past 300 yards ended up going with 140 vld it was what the rifle preferred 1.5 inch @ 500 made for a good deer load.

David Bailey won the 2012 nationals shooting a straight 280 with 180 hybrids(if memory serves me) and was on the team that set set a new record at last years nations. Should be able to get 2800+ pretty easy out of a long barrel but not sure about a 26 inch barrel. A search might pull up his powder of choice.

It is a straight 280 using 180 Hybrids, H-4831sc and a 32" barrel. I shoot the low node at 2860 fps because it is a giant node and works in any condition. There is another node around 2940 fps with a 32" barrel but it is about half as wide as the low node. Compared to other popular cartridges the high node is good sized.

61.7gr H1000 with a 30" tube and 180 Hyrbids or 175gr smks all shoot good at 1k in my rifle. Brass is LC -06 Match necked down.

It is a standard chamber and yes you can. Been doing it for a number of years, I do use a drop tube. I use LC -06 match brass neck it down and then move the shoulder forward the .050" from -06 to 280.

Ok, not 180's, haven't bought any yet, but here's today's data from my rifle with 168 Sierra MK's.

168 Sierra Match King
H4831SC powder
26" Bartlein Remington Sendero Contour.
Straight 280 Remington chambering, .020" off the lands, the barrel is new, only 20 rounds prior to today.

Five round groups

56.0 grains=2667 fps ave

56.5 grains=2690 fps ave

57.0 grains=2755 fps ave

57.5 grains=2807 fps ave

58.0 grains=2888 fps ave

58.5 grains =2866 fps ave, no idea what happened here, had an ES of 46 and SD of 23. Primers were normal and no sticky bolt.

My best groups were at 56.5 and 58.5 grains.

These are pretty much all over book max loads but worked in my rifle. Posted for information only.

When I get some 180's, I'll post my results.

When I first got my 280 I shot H4831SC and I had the same nodes you did at 56.5 and 58.5gr. With 175s or 180s I never really noticed a difference on target with either.
