Barrel Length 6mm Rem BR ?

What barrel length should I go with on my 6mm Rem BR , and best twist rate ?
It will mostly be a varmint gun shooting light bullets , but I don't want to be tied down to only light bullets.
Thanks.....Sarge

In my opinion, if you are PRIMARILY going after varmints (carry gun?) BUT want to shoot heavier bullets, presumably at an F-Class match (maybe?) >> I would get a 26-28" (your choice) Heavy Palma contour with a 1-8 twist. If you shoot bullets at or over 100 grains, you really need a 1-8 twist. Those faster twists may very well cause "blow-ups" on light bullets at 3300+f.p.s... It is my opinion, you need to choose which one you really want>>UNLESS you shoot heavier bullets at varmints.

i shoot A LOT of varmints and thru the years i'v tried them all from 17 HMR to a 6.5-284. the 22 br slow twist was my favorite until i tried a 6mmBR 14 twist. i shoot two and they are 27 in barrels, 14 twist and they will shoot in the ones routinely and even in the zeros from a bench. 60-68 gr bullets are superb using fast powder...LT32, b'mark, n133, 8208xbr, etc. these are not carry guns...weighing about 14-16 lbs. i'm getting 3600 fps with 62 gr berger euwin bullets and the ghogs hate them.

O.K. I forgot this bit of information , this is not going to be a carry gun I will be shooting from a bench on all the farms I hunt groung hogs. I was leaning towards a heavy barrel , strait taper or strait 1.200 the entire length.
Thanks .....Sarge

You can do that or a HV taper which is stiff enough in anyones book. I would go with a 12 twist to give you more elbow room in bullet weights as the lighter bullets are harder to find right now.I would stay at 27 inchs or slightly shorter as the velocity you lose is negligable. I shoot a 26 inch with no problems.Having a straight taper is unecessary weight in my opinion.I built a bench type rifle with a straight taper barrel and it weighs way to much.I wish I had gone with a hv instead, but you live and learn. What kind of gun is it going to be such as a bat action, remington, savage or what. That can make a difference too in barrel selection as to how stiff is the reciever to carry that weight without flexing when fired.

That cartridge will push light bullets along real good. And it takes a lot of BC to make up for velocity. Mine has a 24"Hart barrel with 14 twist....it's used on prairie dogs, and a few rockchucks. The thing is awesome with 55-65gr bullets. The most accurate 55gr load is at 3919. The 65gr load does 3675-3710 depending on bullet. Best powder by a good margin in this barrel - with these bullet weights - is AA2230. I can't see any need for more barrel length on this gun. It's a 579 Sako in factory wood varmint stock, barrel is .890" at the muzzle. So the gun isn't heavy by stationary varmint gun standards. And braked there's almost no muzzle jump, it stays put nicely when fired.
