Barrel Length & 6mm BR

Hello, Is 26 or 27 inches long enough for a 8 twist barrel on a 6mm br rifle? I will be shooting a max of 600 yards. Most shots will be 100 to 300 yards. In a standard barrel the max length is 27 inches. Should I go with 27 inches or 26 or special order a longer barrel? Any advise would be appreciated.

For 600 yds 26" would be the minimum. Some guys may disagree & suggest you need a 28", but depending on what your trying to achieve, you should be happy; everything else being in tune.

Hi Jeff...you wont go wrong with a BR!! no matter what the bbl length....I use a std blank which is aprox 28 finished legth...the length is not as imprtant as the ammount of wt. at the muzzel....In the past I have shot a legal "Hunter" class rifle...2-1/4" forearm ...Kodiak action--Jewel trigger w/safety--etc etc....I just put on a "bigger scope",took off the 6x Leu.) and hung a "big" bbl on it!!!!! The thing that is tough to do is control the mzl wt...,like Lynn said!!) it is very noze heavy...and it takes lots of practice and patience to learn what your gun likes.....BUT ...if you learn how to shoot it...it will perform like a champ....just dont let the gun do a noze dive...it will ruin your day..ahhaha.....
Good luk ...let us know how it goes...Roger

My 27" barrel delivers competitive velocities in my 6BR and the 14.5-lb gun balances pretty well. Richard Schatz set some world records with a 25" barrel in his Dasher.

If you can go 27" with no extra charge,or delay), I wouldn't hesitate to do so. We tested a 6BR barrel cut from 33" to 28". We lost only 40 fps TOTAL with a five-inch barrel reduction.

So... the velocity difference between a 27" and a 28" is probably less than 10 fps.

On a 6BR for target use, a 25" is the minimum I would want. On a walk-around Varmint rifle, I wouldn't mind a 23" fluted barrel to save weight.

My Dasher is a HV Krieger 26" 4 groove 1-8, use it for 1000 yard no problems. Far capable of shooting record targets.

Jeff,

I tell the smith to leave it as long as he can. most will wotk out at 27" to 28". That gives you room to cut it off and rechamber later. But, for weight or balance, like Paul said.
