Barrel Galling

AR10 Barrel 003.JPG

I just received my Lyman borescope yesterday and immediately had to try it out. Boy was I surprised what I found in my Krieger barreled AR-10T! Has anyone seen anything like this before? It is about 3 in from the muzzle at 12 o'clock.

Copper being stripped off bullet due to improper storage or maintain.
The bore scope is changing how to clean . I've got friends that spent thousands on a custom , thousands on a scope , work up loads with the most expensive equipment and neglected to buy a Borescope . Now that the Lyman is available I expect more to rethink there cleaning and storage procedures .

Yes I see it a lot . When someone brings a rifle in for work , first thing I do is Borescope it and show the owner the condition of his barrel . It safe the " well it wasn't like that before " right .

Copper near the muzzle is usually the copper after being blown in with gas and cooling . It is usually all around the inside about 2"-4" from muzzle . Not just on one spot onto of rust .or pitting

Remember boys and girls, copper will oxidize much more quicklyer than steel, particularly stainless. When it does, it creates the pits you see in the bore around where the copper cladding existed. It's corrosive. It's ugly. It's a sin. It probably causes crime.

I love JB Bore Paste.

Looks like an Iosso job and plastic brush job to me. add some hoppies for lube. a good bore scope and a flush with some kind of solvent, followed by a good brushing and solvent wipe out
Rescope when clean and store with light film of Hoppies.

No rust there. What you have is bore pitting. What caused it is probably forever unknown. The copper is in/on the pits. Scraped off probably. Does not look like a condensation issue of copper that "atomized" during the initial heat of firing.

Nothing can be done to fill the pits. The copper will come off with some Barnes C-10 application. That's no big deal. The pits are and could only be removed through that small area with serious, probably barrel ruining, buffing.

Rust , pits ,corrosion ,etching ,whatever . Rust causes pits. Improper cleaning and storage .

Yep, you can best believe Krieger didn't ship that barrel like that...I have seen one barrel that looked like that the entire bore. It was determined that Sweets 7.62 copper remover was left in it too long. It really did foul then.
