Barrel Foul question?

I just re-barreled an F Class rifle and chambered in a 6 XC. After barrel break in am surprised to find that after cleaning it takes 5-6 shots to foul barrel so it shoots well. I've seen one or two shots before but have never experienced need for so many shots. With the first few shots @ 3/4 MOA tightens to .175 MOA. Is this common or a sign of something else? Any information would be appreciated. Rick

Depending on how I clean the barrel (JB or whatnot), I've had it take as many as 8 - 10 shots before it settled back in. Which is why I foul my barrel a few days before the match, if I can.

My previous F-TR barrel would take at least ten shots to settle in before going for record. After that it was a hummer, worth the rounds for that accuracy. Generally, I would go to the range and fire 10 foulers before a match. Forgot one time and figured oh well at 800 yards we have unlimited sighters, so I'll be ok. So, went for record after 5-6 rounds and promptly fired three 9's before I cleaned it the rest of way.

My new barrel has and still is a mystery, found a lot of carbon with my new bore scope, we'll see how that does after being really cleaned down to a very shiny bore.

Glad to see it's common. I was pleased with the accuracy then next time out couldn't figure why it was so off. I only have 60 +/- down the tube but the last two times after clean it took 6 times each to get dialed in. Thank for the information.

In break in I ran 3 patches with Bore Tech Eliminator and two dry after each shot for first 5 shots, 6th shot 2 patches bore tech and then nylon brush, same procedure 7-10 shot as first 5. Next 5 shots 2 patches bore tech then nylon brush soaked with sweets, 3 dry patches and two more sets of 5 more shots with same procedure. After first 25 shots considered broke in to shoot. Cleaned after 15 shots with 3 patches with Bore Tech and 2 dry patches. That was when I noticed the need to shoot several shots before barrel dialed in for accuracy.

Try running a patch with some oil like Ballistol through, then wipe it out with a single patch when you're ready to shoot. That little bit of lube gets me on the money second shot, which is good, because this side of the world, we only get two sighters.

Just remember you chamber will need attention to make sure it's dry.
