Barrel Drop

OleFreak and Outrider27
Thanks for the information. I have ordered the GunSmither Block and hope that does the trick. I will post once I get that installed hopefully this weekend.

Were impacts on the fifty yard target well above your aiming point, and then after dialing the scopes elevation down (clockwise) far as it’ll go, the impacts did move downwards but not far enough to bring ‘em down to the aiming point? If that be the case then your build has the exact opposite of barrel droop, “something(s)” has given the barrel a muzzle end up attitude relative to the plane of the scope rail.

That “something(s)” might be that you’ve cranked up on the jack screw of that adjustable v-block beyond far enough, maybe well beyond, and/or, IIRC, there’s some sort of an adjustable barrel support feature in the barrel channel of that Archangel stock and it’s presently providing too much barrel support, possibly way too much.

“Some” barrel support may well be necessary, especially with that 28” bull, but “some” would be what you’d get when the barrel lands on the support in the barrel channel just a hair before the bottom side of the receiver’s nose lands on the stock’s inletting where the action screw comes up through from underneath. Having only the one action screw, something has to support the weight of the barrel, but not necessarily provide it lift, or otherwise the weight of the barrel will cause the barreled action to make like a teeter totter, to pivot in the stock just ahead of the single action screw and jack the rear of the receiver up from the inletting until, either the barrel finally does land on something or, the backside of the trigger housing rises up and ‘hooks’ in underneath a shelf formed by the inletting that’s supposed to support the receiver’s backside.

I am the inventor and manufacturer of the "Gunsmitherâ„¢ Elevating Barrel Block". I came up with it years ago after finding a few customers 10/22's that would not print on paper with the scope elevation maxed out, especially with cheap scopes.

The undersized barrel shank on many factory barrels leaves a sloppy fit in the receiver, and the "V" shaped factory style block pulls the barrel downward, causing "barrel droop", or "sag". The block I make takes the play out of sloppy fitting barrel to receiver junctions by pushing the barrel up slightly with a set screw.

Now, if your barrel has a nice, snug fitting barrel to receiver join up, the elevation feature of my block will not help. In that case, use the Burris rings.

Best of luck whatever you use. Joe Beary - (aka - "gunsmither" on many other sites)

Get some15 thou.shim stock.
Cut 3 or 4 pieces to fit between the barrel and the ledge of the block while the barrel is in but loose.
Put as many as it takes to get a firm fit.
Tighten the screws.
Done.

Gun Smith I have ordered your block and hope that does the trick. Does a flat surface need to be filed on the barrel V slot in order to create a square surface to push against? I can see how your Block can make a difference and hopefully solve my problem. I ordered this past Monday so with any luck I should have it by this weekend to test it out. Thanks for everyone's input.

OK OleFreak That was a mouth full. Thanks for your information, but let me explain. This gun when Bore Sighting it with a scope. The POI is below the crosshairs of a "Centered" scope. By turning the Elevation Turret UP or Counter-Clockwise the crosshairs drops down getting closer to the POI. However, I can not get there without full adjustment Up on the Elevation setting. With shims I can get there, but that is not how I want to correct this problem, if at all possible. I would like to correct as much of the problem by lifting the barrel. The "GunSmither Block sounds like it will help correct the problem.

This link shows what to do with it. Very simple. Good instructions come with it. Hope it helps you. Joe

“This gun when bore sighting …”

Understood, you’re on the right track. The area in question on my two GM barrels was both rounded and projected too far. Filing ‘em a flat also moved the edge back far enough to make the block face shoving on the barrel stand near vertical. Don’t mix the GunSmither elevating block with shims, do one or the other, the GunSmither block would be my choice. Follow Joe’s installation instructions and you’ll get ‘er done.

Well I received the "Gunsmither" Block yesterday and installed this morning. Needed to file a small amount on the barrel V-Groove to create a flat surface. Devised a way with two lasers to measure total barrel droop and therefore gage any improvement. The GS Block was able to take 40% of the total drop out, measured at 20 feet. My scope is able to handle the remaining 60% based on bore sighting the gun. Rain all weekend from Hurricane Patricia, so no gun range this weekend. Thanks for all the help. Will let you know how the range goes.
