Barrel coming out of alignment during threading

Here's what I use. I have it mounted in a toolholder and drop it on the tool post vs a stand. Easy to run in and out of the barrel.

That’s what I use.
It a really nice indicator, MSC occasionally has them on sale in their sale brochure.
 
I'm wondering if the OP is using a range rod (which is what he stated), or a 'Gordy' rod that's not tapered, and uses standard pilot bushings that fit piloted chambering reamers? There's quite a difference between the two...
