barrel chambering method?

What is the preferred method of chambering a barrel now days? Is it through the headstock or between centers? Also whats the preferred method of holding the reamer? Is it using a floating reamer holder?

Seriously it is all about the type of equipment you have and personal preference
I chamber with the barrel through the headstock, held by spider chucks at both ends. I indicate, drill, prebore and ream with a floating reamer pusher. This is the method that gives the best results for me on my equipment. Opinions on this subject vary widely.

Over the winter I built a 6BR for F class. It was my first and I did a lot of research. I have a Grizzly 12X36 lathe. I made an outboard head stock spider and used the OEM 4 Jaw with the barrel (Bartlein) through the headstock. The barrel was centered on both the 4 Jaw and spider using carefully fitted brass dowels to 0.0002" TIR. I used a PTG Reamer and Viper Venom as per PTG instructions. It cut like butter and finished beautifully. A truly fine tool.

I made a floating reamer holder but started with the tail-stock dead center. About 1/3 of the way through I tried the floater. What a difference. Using the dead center the reamer pulled out with some effort. With the floater it was much tighter. I finished with the floater. The gun turned out better than hoped. It is easily a five shot 1/2 MOA gun with various ammunition and me behind the trigger and I'm not much of a marksman.

I too use the thu the headstock with a spider on the back side. Pre-bore the hole and then use a floating reamer holder that pushes the reamer into the bored hole.

The opinions you will get will be varied. In the end you have to be able to pick the fly sh%t out of the pepper. Many ways to skin the cat and in the end, the cat is still skinned.

Congrats on the outcome. As said above, may ways to skin a cat. The MOST important thing, regardless of how you do it is attention to details. The devil is always in the details

LMAO or just use a 1/2" drill to spin the reamer wide open as you put a cinder block on top of the barrel to hold it still on the work bench. Kinda floating that way......right? ;D

You'd just need a bigger chuck mounted on a 1/2" arbor. I'm sure you can get one fron Grizzley.
