Barrel break in recomendations...

I recently was able to get a Savage LRPV for a very nice price as was wondering what break in I should use. I'm sure there will be more opinions than my arm is long but trying the 6br again I want to make sure I cover my bases for initial rifle setup. Thanks for the help fellas....

Whatever regime you decide on my biggest piece of advice should you chose to keep the factory barrel is to bring with you to the range a small booklet and a pen..

You will notice that the factory barrel will most likely not start shooting well untill it has quite a number of rounds through it , this is all fine and dandy but you need to record at what point this is and when it starts to deteriorate...

For example, if the gun settles down at 15 rnds but accuracy starts falling at 30 you now know the window of your best accuracy.

One of the downfalls of having a factory barrel that fouls hard and fast , no amount of proper break in will help a bore that catches copper due to poor interior quality.. Not to say it won't shoot outstanding at some point but you just need to know the window of when that is.

Good luck.

Just shoot it, when done for the day take it home and give it a good cleaning, Get all the powder fouling and copper out and then go shoot again. It is a factory Savage barrel and like others you will get what you get.
All my hunting and for fun guns are Savage and this is my and others break in procedure and I have not ruined a barrel or rifle yet.
I believe there was a barrel maker who said " barrel break in is marketing hype to sell more barrels."

I totally agree whith what you just said good I idea I could not said any better.

You may find that the factory Savage barrel shoots better with a little copper in it, to fill in the "potholes" in the rifling. I found that only cleaning out the fouling worked best until about 200 rounds in a new barrel, then use a copper cleaner and take about 90% of the copper fouling out, leaving some visible in the muzzle. Cleaning out ALL the copper resulted in not regaining accuracy until about 40 rounds down the tube. And as GT and Patch advise, never hurts to keep good records.

This of course, has NOTHING to do with aftermarket, hand lapped barrels that don't tend to build copper like a crude (by comparison) factory barrel.

Of course, YMMV.

The only reason I ask is that according to Jeff in Savages' tech department all there barrels come ready to shoot out of the box and require no break in at all.. I just figured if trying to get the most out of the barrel I can I figured it couldn't hurt. With that said I've still to date never broke in any of my Factory Savage rifles, all have shot above expectations for a factory barrel with the exception of the Model 12 BR in 6mmBR I bought last year, It wouldn't shoot at all, but turns out there was a rifling issue toward the muzzle and Savage ended up rebarreling the rifle..
