Ballistol?

Ballistol has never made me choke up, but it certainly is, uh, pungent.
Now that I've gotten onto it for cleaning muzzleloaders, I actually am starting to like the smell.
Funny story, I just recently introduced my 8 year old son to the smells of G96 and Hoppes#9. He was captivated!

Absolutely correct. Ballistol and hot soapy water. Just don’t put them in the dishwasher. Makes the wife go bat $hit crazy.
If your not cleaning your blackpowder up with Simple Green you need educated friend. So fast and easy, it seems unreal. When finshed oil the barrel, motor oil works fine.

The only issue I have with Ballistol is the price. I dilute it with water to use as a sort of all purpose cleaner and in my range bag undiluted as a multipurpose oil / cleaner / dressing. I like that it's non toxic, the smell doesn't bother me. I also use mineral oil on a piece of flannel to wipe down guns. For lube it's usually LSA, I bought 2 quarts which is a lifetime supply. I used to buy Kroil and Silikroil by the gallon but since I retired I haven't needed to re-up.Microil is also a good oil that wont't gum up. Acetone ATF is a better penetrant but Kroil is more convenient.

…Does getting a whiff, even a light whiff of the scent of Ballistol make any of you cough, or is that just me?
Nope, me too. I have a spray can of the stuff, that will probably be willed to my heirs.
Now, Hoppe’s, that’s the good stuff.

I absolutely cant stand the smell of Ballistol , when you grow up with good o # 9 everything stinks.
But it works very nice.
I just disassembled an old fishing reel last week
I have a little glass jar i dump cleaner in so i may dip an old tooth brush for deep cleaning. .
I scrubbed the heck out of that old reel and parts. Blew off with compressed air and paper towel then lube and reassembled.
I know rough project right.
Ballistol gets in and lifts off crud, and surfaces contaminants like dusty rust, calcium crystals
It did an fine job on cleaning, lubricating, and we will see how it protects over time.
When used for its designed application most products works as listed. Its amazing what you find out by reading the manufacturers label
Hahaha.

I do a lot of work on old penn reels, never used ballistol on them but will try it out. I have lots of it and lots of reels :)

If you are considering using it on the reels for lubrication, I am not sure I would consider that the best use. Anybody have comments? I see it skin over and get a bit gummy when I wipe or brush it on parkerized items such as M1 receivers, but I am overapplying it till it soaks in, then I wipe most of it off. I can't see that helping out. I consider it more of a protectant.

Don’t. Ballistol will turn gummy after long exposure to air, use a good quality light viscosity synthetic oil for your nice reels
I'm glad that I'm not the only one that doubted it for lubrication. I watch Project Farm on Youtube. I know that you could use weird things like Honey or Olive Oil for motor oil (can't remember the exact things he's tried), but, well they'll only really "get you by" in an emergency.

I sometimes use it straight, sometimes cut with water, sometimes cut with alcohol.
