Bald Eagle Rest & Shadetree joy stick top

hello,

i am very pleased with my rest. however, i have trouble with the windage knob because the cable flexes way too much. First question, does anyone know a mod to correct this issue?

second question, if i add the shadetree joystick top, would it become a better rest? in other words, is the shadetree joy stick top a good item? how would you rate it?

I have two of them, so that should answer some of the question anecdotally. I keep one set up for 3"flat bottomed stocks and one for standard varmint or tactical type stocks. I think they are a well made piece of gear. I wouldn't put it in the same category as the Seb, but there is a little difference in price point as well. Over all I am pretty happy with them and think they make prairie dogging a lot more fun.

Deep six the cable drive and replace it with a threaded knob .....the way the Bald Eagle windage tops were originally designed. Slop in making sight adjustments will never benefit accuracy......and all those cable drives do have slop. Basic BE rest = good.....cable drive top = not ready for prime time.
I shot IBS Score for years with a BE rest (original Gebhart) with a Shadetree top and highly recommend that set-up for those who can't fund a Farley.

Have two BE rests. FIRST thing to go was the cable.......
Go to www.mcmaster.com and get part# 6079K33

I have just that, Bald Eagle base & Shadetree top. I did make an extension piece to lengthen the control arm a few inches. That was just a matter of personal preference & not needed to function properly. I'm very pleased with it.

Which Bald Eagle base do you have?

I have the NON-Slingshot model with Large screws the elevation knob gets in the way of the joystick.

Should be a non factor with the slingshot.

Due to my experience I could not recommend the NON-Slingshot base and the Shadetree. My Farley Co-Axial Compact does not have this issue. YMMV.

Most replace the rear leg screw with a flush mount setup since you really dont need a speed screw in there with the joystick

Dusty,

The rear leg on my base sits at the 7 to 8 o'clock position where the rifle stock would be at the 6 o'clock. In other words the rear leg is not perfectly behind the rifle or joystick but to the left of it. This makes leveling the rest a little more work.

I tried going shorter on the back screw but this didn't really solve the problem. Since this canted the rifle. rearward.

A flush mount may very well solve the problem.

It sounds as tho your rest top needs to be aligned straighter with the base- in other words the top needs to turn on the post so that when everything is tight the top is perfectly square and your gun in the bags sits right over the back leg straight. Then you get a short foot and you can level it correctly

I wasn't sure I could adjust the top on the post? I line the set screw into the notch cut into the post doing otherwise leaves the top unstable and I cringe thinking of the screw biting into the threading. I'll take a look at it when I get home tomorrow if I could rotate the bag on the post that would solve virtually all my problems, and I would be able to recommend the bottom to use with the Shadetree as others have.

You have to take the rest apart and twist the post to where it lines up correctly. All bases are a bit different and the tops need to be set up on each base. Once you get it lined up life will be good once again.

Here is the instructions on butch's site for the rest top.

My bald eagle rest windage adjustment was very sticky, causing the cable to flop back and forth and rebounding when trying to adjust it. I solved this by putting a little Frog Lube on the treads on both ends of the cable. Works like it's supposed to now, so far anyway. Used the frog lube paste since it was handy at the time, no other reason. You might want to try lubing it up with something.

Just looked at the knob modification using the carb bolts. I like the look of it and will have to check into doing this.

Big fan of shadetree. I have two of them and might be talked into selling one. Not everyone likes the joystick but I love it.

I have the bald eagle base that I like because of the rack and pinion height adjustment. I just made an extra long stick for mine today to get the handle just where I want it.
