bad primers

Also, did I read correctly in post #16, these are SMALL RIFLE primers?
That's WHAT Ebb said,. YIKES,.. a Tripple,.. "Whammy" !
TOUGHER, thicker cased, Small Rifle Primers that, WERE,. "Wet" and,.. OLD,.. oh, My !
Pace yourself, Ebb and Pull, a Hundred at a Time to Save,.. the Cases, Bullets and Powder.
And NEVER Buy,.. "cheap" Old, Primers,.. again !

Hey, Ebb,.
I WASN'T immune to, the CHEAP, "Deal Chit",.. Myself !
I once Bought, a Pound of OLD ( Probably Poorly stored ) Metal can, IMR 3031 and reloaded some, .45-70 Ammo, that went "Poof" and barely got, the Bullet,.. Out of, the Muzzle !
So much for, the $5.00 a Pound, Gun Powder "Deal" !
Luckily I had, a Collett type, Bullet Puller and Had only, Loaded,.. 20 of, them,..

With the quantity 38s and 9mms I would destroy 4 or 5 kinetic pullers. I think maybe a collet is the answer.
Maybe
How many bullets are you gonna destroy with a collet?
I don't know if you plan on re-using the bullets
Perhaps weigh the cost of trashing a hammer vs trashing the bullets.
The bullets would be worth more to me.
I have 2 of this style/brand puller (Quinetics) and havent broken one yet in 30 yrs of use
I've used it to disassemble 44 Mag loads with heavy crimp so
I dunno man
-------------------------
If I had to also buy new bullets, and new primers
I think I'd just start over and buy a 500 lot of once fired brass and load everything new
Shoot I'll give ya some 38 special brass if all you're trying to save is the brass.

We might at this point draw attention to this thread:

Never have I imagined percussion to remove projectiles was sound practice.....

Dayum!
that's .............
Like the chances of winning the lotto
But the other way around
------------
If I got loose primer pockets at least this is good to be aware of.
Now the way a primer is designed, the anvil has to be compressed against the compound in the cup
I suppose with a loose primer, powder could enter through the flashole and act to press the anvil
against the compound then set it off when the cup reseats itself in the primer pocket.
I have also seen the anvil easily come out of the cup, they're not in there very tight
So if the primer backed out slightly, the anvil could get oriented sideways inside the cup
then set off the compound when being jostled
I don't believe just the primer itself can be set off just by kinetic force of the mallet
It may have "Appeared this way" to the user it happened to
But my suspicions are the anvil in the cup got turned so one of the pokey legs set off the compound
Not the kinetic force of using the hammer.
------------
Otherwise if we think abhout it
If primers were that sensitive then they should be going off willy nilly due to recoil
inside the 30 rnd AR mag
Inside a shotgun Tube Mag
inside an AR-10 P-Mag
inside a Steel AI 300 winmag Mag
------------
I've also heard of a guy once setting off the Whole primer column in his Dillon Progressive
and sending the plastic level indicator through his roof
"Said it hurt his ears"
But I aint gonna stop using my Dillon because of it.

No Mike you were not mistaken, I was they have always been pistol primers. Donald I still have some of the 38s you, Jim and I loaded many years ago. They are still 100% reliable. I have looked at the collet pullers and the only thing that has held me back is many say they damage a cast and crimped bullet. I suspect that if they are crimped well they will be damaged no matter the method used. I have looked at the metal "thing" that ive seen on the net that grabs a bullet above the press, and allows you to use the press and pull the on the down stroke. If anyone here has any Insite on which method is best to not damage bullets, I would be interested in hearing from you.

I've only pulled 6mm bullets out of my Lapua 6br brass (300) of them. I believe the collets that are made for the RCBS are better quality. It does not leave a mark on jacketed uncrimped bullets. However with what you're dealing with it's possible. I know one thing, when I made that 300 round loading mistake of too much seating depth by quite a bit I decided right then and there I wasn't going to play whack a mole.
