Went shooting today it has been 3 weeks . And shot this , all the info is on the target. Pretty happy over all with some big disappointments as always with fliers . but good for a 85 yo . I'm beginning to think this is best I can do . but I know the gun will shoot in the one's.
The last two groups with IMR4198 and H4198 were a lot quieter noise wise kind a surprised me ,

Art,
Just being on the right side of the grass is an achievement at 85 yrs young. That's some great shooting young man! Keep it up.

Art, I built a new 222 with an 8 twist. I'm shooting 1's with H322 and 60 grain Bergers at 3100fps. Try H322, I had a pleasant surprise when I did.

I did that als0. I took a 700/223/pencil barrel shot a lot. And 0rdered a new bull 222 rem./26"/s.s. barrel by Wilson from Urban Rifleman. Had a love affair with 222 from the early 70's. First 5 shot group after sight in was 5 into 1/3 of a penny brand new. I hope to go gopher shooting this week with it for 2nd time out it's deadly n them. Mine is in a laminated Stockey's thumb h0le stock. A real eye catcher t0 look at. Always wanted another 222 and well worth the work. Like it better than the 223 that it was by far. Got great brass for 222 from Star Line very high quality i think. Enjoy your's i love mine.

My old barrel would shoot pretty consistency in the 1's before it went south it was a Hart barrel, and my new Hart barrel will do it once in a while .But it needs to shot in the low 2's consistently . I do a lot of shooting in a 100 yd chicken coup . It has to shoot good groups in the coup so when I shoot out side I know what to execpt . My new barrel is a 14 twist I'm shooting 52gr Bergers.

I got mine built with 1/12" twist. Any powder seams to shoot great. I use 50 vmax for gopher shooting. The 222 is the easiest round i ever worked with to get it shooting good.

I shot mine this week as well: Lapua brass, Berger 52s, and 20.5 of H4198 out of a 13tw bartlein, and it's shooting into the. 3s & 4s without really trying. I know it can shoot better. I think I need a stiffer stock and I decided to sort my 222 brass for the first time ever after the range visit, so that should hopefully tighten things up next outing.

Top left target is starting to look good
Ummm regardless of what anybody says about jamming
I have never jammed anything .224 caliber
The only bullets I jam into the rifling are Lonnnng VLD bullets with a big long Radius Ogives which gives a very smooth gradual taper as it eases into the rifling.
Short 50-55 grn bullets are mor blunt in relation.
The .224 cal bullets used for 22 calibers do not have that kind of slow smooth ogive taper to them
Its good to try sure, but I don't think it would work well for this caliber.
--------------------------------------
I am thinking more its the powder
Try some W-748 and some H-322 with a medium to warm load
Then work a seating depth ladder test .005" off and work back up to .040" off
to make it quick and simple
1 bullet each seating depth .005" back at a time
Watch your pattern and you should see 2 or 3 suddenly hudle together
That is your window to hone in on your seating depth by .001" at a time then
Or send you rifle to me and I'll work up a load for it
