Back to the creedmore

Got the creedmore and went to work on dialing in a load. Nosler Manuel gives OAL at 2.825. I got my OAL gauge out and it only read 2.755. Naturally I figured I made a mistake but after several tests it remained at 2.755. I still thought I was wrong. I loaded three shells at 2.825 and made the mistake of chambering one. I almost didn't get the shell ejected due to it being jammed in the chamber. After trial and error I finally got the shells to JUST miss the lands at 2.794. Should I send it back to Savage or just load for the length.

If the manual number of 2.825 is OVERALL LENGTH, other than verifying it will fit in the magazine, it is a USELESS number. Look in to getting the Hornady tools to measure base to ogive and go from there OR watch this a video for another option to find out where the bullet is in reference to the lands.

Well, You do not mention what bullet you are loading for so, we are kinda offering info blind.
I agree with Hog 100%.
Funny fact for you. Look here at Barnes and notice what they are giving as COAL.

Funny isn't the word. JOKE is more like it, every weight bullet with only two COALS. Why bother with a COAL? Having said that, I wouldn't use Barnes bullets if you gave them to me.

"I almost didn't get the shell ejected due to it being jammed in the chamber"

Also, let this be a lesson not to force a round into the chamber.
You had to have some serious pressure resistance closing the bolt which should have immediately sent out a mental red flag saying something was not correct.

I appreciate the responses but to tell the truth most of you are talking way over my knowledge of OAL. I always believed the with a 6.5 bullet, no matter the grains, would be the same OAL. My manual simply states the OAL on the creedmore, no matter the weight.

And thats where manuels are wrong. You have to meaure your chamber, load for your rifle. Just because a manuel says a certain over all length doesnt mean its the same as your chamber... never is usually..

Just because a manuel says you can shoot a certain max powder charge doesnt mean it will be safe in every rifle.. ive seen it firat hand where my rifle was hitting pressure signs but the book said I could still load more powder... you gotta use uncommon sence

YOu need to measure how long your freebore is. The oal mesurement in most manuals maybe all lf them is not something to fallow if your rifle has a short lead. I agree with the other statement above by other members. Every bullet has a diferent oal. You jeeed to mesure from the ogive.

Thanks sniper. I have never had a rifle that measures that much shorter than the manual specifies. What I find interesting is that if I bought factory ammo, and it was set to standard OAL, it would be too long to chamber. I have been reloading for 10-12 years and have been happy with the results ( with no blow ups LOL). I just try to learn everything I can and you folks are a wealth of knowledge.
