--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Two of my cousins were in from Atlanta for the
Thanksgiving weekend. David Phillips, 12 and Robert,10
shoot with me a couple of times a year when they visit
their grandparents here in Dixon Springs.
They arrived Wednesday noon and David headed for the woods
with 243 in hand. Wasn't long before he had his first
deer down. Shooting Winchester factory fodder,100gr spitzers,
David placed the bullet well and the deer only ran about
20 yards and dropped.
Last summer David made a 800 yd shot on Ole Chuckie at
the Dome. He sent me word that he wanted to shoot with
me again on his Thanksgiving visit. Saturday we met at the
range and he had a 30 M1 carbine and his 243 Marlin.
We shot both and made a small adjustment to the 243 scope.
When we left I took his 243 home to clean it and also reload
some of the empty cases we had fired.
Sunday a.m. I got up early and cleaned the gun. Then I decided on 87 gr
V-max for his load. I checked my files for my old v-max load
and figured out the OAL of the loaded round and dropped powder
into 15 cases and stuffed the 87's on top. I called David and he
had gone with grandad to bottle feed a calf. So I had a little time
and went to my men's church group meeting.
Then I met David, Robert, and their Dad at the range. I told them
to let me shoot the reloads first to make sure they were safe and OK.
I took 2 shots and had a good 1 in. group 2 inches high at 100.
PERFECT!!!!
Next, David put 2 in a little wad and then Robert who has hardly
ever shot also put 2 in another little wad. I considered this to be
really good shooting because the boys were shooting off a bipod and rear
bag. Also, the rifle is a featherweight Marlin with a pencil size barrel.
About this time Grandad and Grandma drove up to watch the boys.
Next they hit the 100 yd gong a couple of times.
They were extremely happy with the results so I mentioned raising
the stakes.
"300 yard gong"
I really was not expecting a hit, but to my surprise
David hit it his first two shots and Robert also hit it on his first try.
300 yard gong---The two boys took 3 shots--3 kills!!!!!
The 87 V-Max will work in this gun!
