Athlon 15-60X BR Scopes

Athlon offers 2 15-60X scopes one in the Ares series and the other in the Heras series. I would like to correspond with anyone using one or has compared both. I understand the quality compares favorably to more expensive glass.

I have a Heras and am really impressed with it.
The issues i know about it from my use are that the crosshairs are thin. However, they are the same as most of the other scopes comparable on the market with the exception of Sightron MOA-2 and Kalthes. This is a personal thing with my eyes so check.
Since these are marketed as air rifle scopes the adjustment for parallax is finicky over 300 yards. Just gets being used too that is all.
In the 2 we have here both exhibit a blue or orange glow ring around the outside of the lenses depending on light conditions. Not a problem but noticeable. Eyebox is short.
I prefer the Ares reticle over the Heras but either is usable so again personnal choice.
I find the reticle hard to see against the black target background in the Heras at 40 power but far better at 60 power.
The lenses compare very favorably to my friends Nightforce and Kalthes scopes so no complaint about the lense quality.
I really like the overall package and just ordered another in the Ares to compare between the Hera and Ares.
If the erector system holds up then these scopes are going to really sell.

I ran a box test on the HERAS one round then up 10 moa, one round then right 8 moa, one round then down 10moa and one round then back 8 moa left to origin. Repeated twice and it came in perfectly.
I also ran a test where I shot 2 rounds then up and down 30 moa twice then fired another. Then repeated 2 more times. The scope shot perfectly.
If this continues then these scopes are going to be a real winner.

Hi Guys I was able to compare the 2 scopes today and found some interesting things.
First, the weather was cloudy and high 20 to 40 kph winds. The light was diffuse and not bright or directional. Temperature was 27-28 degrees F.

1st finding. The Ares scope would not adjust the parallax to 550 yards (500 meters). It was close but was not clear and 4 people tried so it wasn't just me. The Heras would adjust so this might simply be a setup issue with the Ares. The Areas adjusted up to 440 yards (400 meters) perfectly.
2nd finding. The ring of haze around the inside of the lens was present in both scopes and about the same intensity. However, when viewing a target the scopes were clear. Short eyebox so when you pulled your head back you saw the haze.
3rd finding. All the guys felt that the lenses quality actually presented the same picture. We couldn't tell any difference between the two models in this light condition.
4th finding. I much prefer the reticle in the Ares model. It is a floating dot.
5th finding. The illuminated dot was not centered to the dot and was slightly off.
6th finding Except for the illumination dial switch on the parallax dial, everything else between the 2 scopes appeared to be identical.

Conclusion. Unless you specifically wanted the Ares reticle I see no reason to buy the Ares scope and pay the additional cost.

I see the ARES on the airgun websites, how does it handle the recoil of centerfire rifles?

Not to hijack the thread but has anyone compared the Ares to the Vortex Golden Eagle? I've heard its very compatible.

We have compared against a Nightforce Comp and Kalthes and found it compatible. However, I can look against the Golden Eagle once the temps warm up a bit. Right now, it is -41 C and a bit too chilly to go to the range. I assume it would be close because the other scopes are.

Update again
Another Ares scope arrived and was briefly tested today. However, we did not look at a target due to weather conditions and too much snow to get to the targets. This second scope would also not adjust the parallax to 550 yards (500 meters) against the berms and railings. It was very close but was not clear and 2 other people tried so it wasn't just me. Again, the Ares adjusted up to 440 yards (400 meters) perfectly.
The temperature forecast has moderated to above freezing and the snow stopped so we will be shooting an F-Class match at 500 meters (600 yards) again on Sunday. I will have a chance to see how the scope works at 500 meters on a proper target.
Again, I purchased this scope for a 300 meter and closer rifle so I am completely satisfied with what I see with this scope but it would be nice to be able to adjust the parallax properly to infinity.

I will try it again on Sunday and verify what I saw yesterday. It was suggested I do that when i mentioned it with my dealer of the scope but right now I am totally happy with the scope for the shorter ranges that I may not bother. I continue to be impressed with it other than that minor detail. if Athlon would offer the Ares crosshair in the Heras I would be happy simply buying that scope. I believe these scopes to be great value.

We compared the Area scope to the Vortex Golden Eagle this afternoon with 4 people looking through the scopes on the 2 rifles set side by side. Everybody agreed the Ares was clearer and brighter than the GE while set at 40 power and looking at a 500 meter target. The weather was medium overcast clouds and not particularly bright. Temperature was about 40 degrees F. All were impressed with the Ares.
Interestingly, I was able to set the parallax properly today on the target and had no issues shooting the match. The only difference between today and the other day weather wise was the temperature. It is possible that since I had noticed the parallax issues on both scopes when it was a lot colder that this may be a factor. When the dealer checked this scope out before shipping it to me and claimed he could adjust the scope clearly out to infinity he did it from inside his place and not outside in the cold.
Again, I continue to be impressed with this scope family for the cost of it.

I don't have that model, but I do have the Athlon ETR 4.5 - 30. It is more clear and tracks better than my NF comp. The crosshairs are a little thicker on the Athlon and are easier to see with my eyes. I've seriously considered selling my NF and getting one of the new Athlon's.
