ATF requires gunsmith assembling barrel to action to engrave it?

I have a Savage PTA at a gunsmiths to be trued and a rifle basix Sav-2 trigger installed, followed by installing a CBI barrel. I was notified shipment will be delayed because ATF requires him to engrave his business name on it. Never heard of this, can anyone point me to the relevant ATF regulation? It is a factory action, already serialized.

Possible bs but it may be necessary now as it's considered manufacturing , or if that's his 07 ffl . ( manufact )
He's probably just covering his assets

Resolved. Apparently when he assembles a rifle from parts and sells it he does. He called ATF and he didn't have to engrave this as he was not "manufacturering" it. ATF language a little opaque in places.

I think where the problem with the atf. Would arise the chamber should be on the barrel for resale .
Why would someone take that chance is beyond me . Larry

We should get the atty general to strike this ridiculous Obama leftover. Anybody working on it that you know of?

Here's a detailed response from the ATF (received BTW one business day after my query:
Mr. ************:

This is in reply to your recent email to the Firearms Industry Programs Branch (FIPB) Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) seeking information on gunsmithing. Specifically you wish to know if a gunsmith who assembles a firearm as a service for you is required to mark the assembled firearm with his information.

An individual is “engaged in the business” of gunsmithing, as defined in 18 U.S.C. 921(a)(21)(D) and 27 CFR 478.11, when he or she receives firearms (frames, receivers, or otherwise) provided by a customer for the purposes of repairing, modifying, embellishing, refurbishing, or installing parts in or on those firearms. An individual who wishes to operate as a gunsmith must possess a Type 01 dealer/gunsmith federal firearms license prior to performing any type of the above mentioned services to firearms for customers.

In the scenario presented in your email, the gunsmith has received a firearm receiver, barrel and various other component parts etc. purchased by yourself and assembled them as a service for you. In this scenario the gunsmith is not required to mark the assembled firearm with his information as he has not manufactured the firearm he has assembled it as a gunsmithing service.

We thank you for your inquiry and trust that the foregoing has been responsive.

In the spirit of this thread, is it customary that pre-chambered barrels purchased for rifles like Savage or 783 Rems, have the caliber engraved when you receive them?

Leftists courts have seemed to give ATF lots of leeway and 'give em and inch and they will take a mile'.

Nope.
All you get is engravings on the breach face for cal (not the cartridge it's chambered for, only the bore size)., twist and grade of barrel.

Pre threaded and chambered barrels are stamped , usually every 120 degrees , so no matter it's position it's able to be read .

I know that barrel blanks are marked this way. Which companies mark pre chambered barrels in this manner? Thanks.

This sounds reasonable. Care to name some pre chambered barrel brands that do this, or perhaps all of them do? Thanks for the reply.
