Asleep or Still Up

Just kicking around the ideas of different shooters pertaining to bullets going to sleep and remaining accurate thru-out the flight. Example. Some guys believe that a bullet can,go to sleep) at 100 yds. and maintain it's accuracy. Some guys believe that just because a bullet is accurate at 100 yds. does not mean that it will be accurate at 500 or 600 yds.Would like some opinions on the subject. Thanks, Bill

Man, this must be a touchy kind of subject. NO REPLYS??????

I know some of you guys have opinions on this one. Share please???

Personally Bill, for me, if they don't group real well at 100, they don't group too good at 300. But, if I can keep my ES down to 12 fps or less, the tight grouping at 100, usually stays tight at 300,,no vertical) if I do my part. I am a rookie BR shooter, so this might be trivial to you.

Well, you are a step above me cause I don't even consider myself a BR shooter. Your opinion is important. My questions stem from a
mixture of quotes from other shooters and test that I have done in the past. I have found that if my groups are good at 100 yds. then they will be good on out. Bill

I have seen combinations that shot well at 100/200 yards, but did not perform well at 600 yards. I have never seen one that shot poorly at 100/200 yards, but shot great at 600 yards. Most of the combinations that shot poorly at 100/200 yards did not get tested at 600 yards, but some did, due to having nothing else loaded up. Waste of good bullets and powder.

That makes a whole lot more sense than some statements I have heard. Like it sure did not shoot good at 100 yds. but was really putting them in there at 500 yds. Thanks, Bill

So, I gather then that most loads that perform well at 100 yds. will perform well on down range. And if the load does not perform well at 100 yds. don't bother with it at longer distances
Right? Thanks, Bill

Gunamonth,
I was only guessing to be honest with you and wanted to raise some more opinions. I agree fully with that last part. The former part concerning ES, I personally have not seen that but I am nobody to argue the facts as you have seen. The only chrono work I have done has been at 100 yds. But, if I am getting good groups at 100 yds. then I can definitely take out 20 oz. pop bottles filled with water consistantly at 500 and 600 yds. That is a target @ 3 in. wide and 8 in. tall at the most. Just my experience. Thanks, Bill

Seems to me it comes down to simple trigonometry, the further away you get the wider the spread is going to be. I don’t see how something shooting lousy at 100 yards could possibly get better the further away you get.

But, then again, I’m new to this.

Some years ago, I read an article about some testing that was done to investigate the difference in accuracy potential between the 30-06 and the .308. All testing was done with custom barreled 40X match rifles, with 168 gr. Match Kings, and the same Hart barrels in 10 and 12 twist rechambered in both calibers. The upshot of it was that the slower twist that is standard with the .308 was more accurate at closer ranges, and the faster twist, at longer, regardless of caliber. The author concluded that the reason that the .308 has a better reputation for accuracy is that its standard twist is more suited for the shorter range testing that is usually done for publication.

Another example of the twist effect being recognized was when Ruger tightened the twist of their 7 mags because they found that it improved accuracy at long range with heavier bullets.
