As you age what would you do differently..

Absolutely. I woke up on my 40th birthday coughing up that brown stuff & said "Today is the day." Started when I was 10 & after 3/4 of my life smoking it was time. From 3 packs of Camels a day to none. No patch, remembering the misery keeps it real, just acupuncture in my ears. Dont know if it helped but it'll be 29 years the end of this month. Lungs are mostly clear, but have COPD & asthma. Some days it's not so good. Good thing there's cheap Prednisone. The doc says it was likely from smoking, but I think some of the chemicals & work detritus (asbestos dust) I used to breathe has something to do with it too.

I know about the hard candy thing. A full bag of those hard mints a day at first. I broke a tooth & the dentist recommended I try toothpicks. What a good idea. Buy the 5000 pack of round ones if you can find them. Flat ones dont work for long, & the square shanked ones tear the hell out of your lips. Good luck & feel better.
Sort of the same thing, I would wake myself up in the middle of the night wheezing. Finally said that was enough. In1994 I just quit on the spot. I am still alive but have bad days of breathing.

Might quit smoking , if I live long enough . Just to save the money . But let's face it folks . We all made the choices we did , when we did , for whatever reasons . Would I actually "CHANGE" anything ? Probably not . Or I wouldn't have made that choice to begin with .

If I could have I would have completed a Masters Degree. I love to teach but not having a Masters keeps me out of the colleges I would like to teach at. Instead of completing the degree I focused on homeschooling my four kids. All have completed college, one is in her masters, all are fine citizens and three of the four got incredible scholarships. I am very proud of them.
It came at a cost because now I really would like to be at a college teaching, but even with 30 years of experience on top of a BA and tons of extra courses, no one will even look twice at me. But when I guest lecture I get tons of emails and follow up questions. My kids tell me no one ever does that...so I must do something right.

I might have opted to learn a job skill in the Army that would have translated to civilian life instead of signing up for Paratrooper and Ranger schools.

Nahhhhhhh!

I'll be 75 in September, and married to the same wonderful Christian woman for 34 years next week. Hunted African three times, Alaska once, and still kicking it!

I have very few regrets,

Work smarter not harder for one thing. I just purely abused my body physically as I was growing up and basically wore it out. With my dad long term wasn't a consideration when it came to me. With him you worked and if you were still standing at the end of the day you were good to go. Ive had numerous injuries from football, wrecks, work, etc. that have come back to haunt me. Breaking my back at 35 years old in a hunting accident finally did me in.
Secondly I wish I would have gotten my head screwed on straight and continued playing baseball. I had the talent to take me places there and just didn't take advantage of it.

Thanks everybody for the responses. Interesting. It looks like less smoking and drinking, and maybe more education is on the list. I will also add the choice of a wife. That's the difference between the grave, or poor house, and having a a more fulfilling life.

I have made a thousand mistakes in my life. But it somehow turned out OK. I'm a type 1 diabetic from age 17. 41 years ago. I know the next 10-15 years won't be fun. I need to appreciate what I have now. Thanks.

Ya, MOS 11BP doesn't prepare you for many civilian jobs. But in 1966 I was young,in good shape, and somewhat stupid/crazy. It gave me 2 years of adventure and travel to exotic lands. I don't regret it.

If I could do it over I would get PhD's in advanced mathematics and actuarial math, go to work on Wall Street, and totally annihilate it from within.

At 75 I must say everything turned out better than expected, great wife and kids. Been retired 13 years and miss the work but not the BS. I'm comfortable but not rich by any means, and wish our generation had not been so permissive so as to allow our country to sink to into the sad state of affairs we see today.

l'm 77. l can still shoot, drive, and cut my grass with a push mower. Started shooting prairie dogs around 1993. l just wish l had started EARLIER and gone more OFTEN
