As you age what would you do differently..

I think most of us wish we could have been born with the knowledge we have gain by life experiences but that is not the reality of life.
Not to mention the idea of having certainty how some things would turn out. That’s also not reality. Some things in life ultimately are decided by luck. So while these thought exercises interesting to think about they have no validity to base guilt or regret.

I am 85 and my biggest regret was not getting my college degree, it would have made my parents so happy! Best thing I did was marrying St Sandra 64 years ago and quit smoking 40 years ago. Always had a job and we lived beneath our means, so we have a few bucks saved. Never "loved" my job but I have a great retirement. Have been retired for nearly 30 years. Still dreaming, just got a drone and the software is driving me nuts. We maintain our old family farm, 200 acres, for wildlife. Figure every deer we harvest cost $1K. I got 2 last year. Titanium hips, swine aortic valve and the pace maker need a new battery. But I ride my tractors and run the zero turn. Our youngest son, our neighbor, does our heavy lifting. We are blessed and to quote Willie "suprised to find I am still standing upright on the ground"

Hindsight is 20/20, but I am happy and wouldn't do much differently.

I'm only 49, but I would have taken the wife and kids fishing more instead of trying so hard to get things done around the house. That said, I'm pretty content with the rest.

A close friend of my family passed away several years ago. She was just shy of 101. She was literally that old lady who made EVERYONE feel like they were her favorite grandchild, and she was always on the go. At one point in her last year, someone interviewed her and asked her if she could go back to a specific time in her life, when would it be. She wanted to go back to her 80s. Most people didn't get it, but it made sense to me. Her husband was still healthy, the grand kids were grown and starting families of their own. She was able to enjoy their accomplishments in life and see their families blossom. Looking back, it was people like her and her husband that influenced a lot of my bigger decisions in life. I hope I can have a similar impact on those who are behind me.

I would have taken much better care of my back.

I would have never gone to college. Total waste of time.

I would have never moved to Ohio.

I would have moved to Columbia Missouri. :). Found the love of my life when she was young and had a mess of babies.

I'm sure, when I get to heaven, it won't matter.

Honestly I’d do a lot of things differently, the list would be long. That being said I’ve been incredibly blessed and I’m happy where I am now. There's a lot of things I did right and wouldn’t change those, I feel lucky in that regard. Up until the age of forty I did a lot of hunting, fishing, motorcycling etc, I realized I had no retirement somewhere along the way and gave a lot of that up, more moderation anyways. I’m getting to where I can free up more time now and I’d like to get back to that style of living. There’s a few things I’ve learned along the way.

Health is wealth.

Live in the moment, try not to day dream about the future or live in the past good or bad.

Love more, be kinder, it’s easy to be callused or cold. Go out of your way to let those you love know you love them. I do that much better than I use to.

I'll be 84 next month and have much to look back on. Like so many of us do I review past events and decisions that we thought of as right or wrong at the time, I've come to the conclusion that in the long run everything worked out just fine, and some even fantastically. So many of the things that we judged at the time as mistakes have turned out to actually be blessings.
As we mature and grow wiser, we look at things differently. That's done it for me~!

If I could go back there is somethings I would change that as one poster said makes me cringe still... BUT the one thing I would also like you would be the never started smoking.... It was the dumbest thing I ever did.... I finally got enough of not being able to breath and stopped a year ago....

Like everyone says you have to be serious about wanting to stop... IT SUCKS , I wear a patch and it helps , eat hard candy etc... After COVID 5 times and that awful respiratory crap that went around that made you sick for about 90 days my lungs are done... After two widow maker heart attacks I am going to do what I want when I want with what time I have left.... The other crazy thing that happened when I stopped smoking was I just didn't want to drink anymore , the money I save now is crazy... $10 a pack and $5 a beer at my local dive bar adds up...
Absolutely. I woke up on my 40th birthday coughing up that brown stuff & said "Today is the day." Started when I was 10 & after 3/4 of my life smoking it was time. From 3 packs of Camels a day to none. No patch, remembering the misery keeps it real, just acupuncture in my ears. Dont know if it helped but it'll be 29 years the end of this month. Lungs are mostly clear, but have COPD & asthma. Some days it's not so good. Good thing there's cheap Prednisone. The doc says it was likely from smoking, but I think some of the chemicals & work detritus (asbestos dust) I used to breathe has something to do with it too.

I know about the hard candy thing. A full bag of those hard mints a day at first. I broke a tooth & the dentist recommended I try toothpicks. What a good idea. Buy the 5000 pack of round ones if you can find them. Flat ones dont work for long, & the square shanked ones tear the hell out of your lips. Good luck & feel better.

I have just taken on a new job to get the stress off my back as I entre into retirement. I need a job to keep me mentally engaged. But will be going through my social security soon. Not looking forward to this mess.!

I am pretty much in the same boat as you with my lungs now.... I grew up working and fixing everything... I was raised by my grandparents ( lived through the depression , battle of the bulge and farmed for 30 years ) you fixed it , you didn't take it to the shop.... So breathing brake liners and clutches etc didn't help.... I still blame smoking but that respiratory crap and COVID really finished them off.... Like you said , embarrassing how much it sucks to stop smoking keeps me off them...
