As I come to the end of my 80 gr Fowlers .....

I am down to the end of my last 500 fowler 80 gr 6mm bullets. I shoot these with 30.6 gr of varget in a 1:12 twist 26" barrel 6BR. I can shoot .35 5 shot groups (no subtraction, this is the diameter of the largest part of the 5 shot hole).

What bullet are people using (read as you young guys). I am 65 now and don't change what I don't have to. Looks like I am going to have to change bullets. Who is now making a good replacement bullet.

thanks in advance

Bill retired a few years ago. Don't think anybody bought his dies which I think we're the originals used by jef Fowler. So, my 80 fowlers are shot very sparingly!

OOO pardon me,,,I didnt know Mr Schnider had retired,,,,,,the BIB bullets are excellent and so are the Berger 80's !!!...Roger

I received a response from Bill Scheider. He said he is not making bullets at the present time.

I found Barts Ultra and Barts Headhunters available in 100 packs at Sinclair. The 68's are a touch light for my 1:12 twist (IMHO). I will probably get a box of each just to give them a try.

I really don't need to shoot bench type groups anymore anyway. I just like to see a .3 max diameter hole at the end of a 5 shot string. If you take out the .240 or so to claim center to center, the reported group size becomes small enough to please an old man. Won't win any matches, but, does tend to keep the young turks a little respectful at my local ranges.

I really am just going to use this rifle for varmints for the rest of my time. I am 65 now so I should be able to shoot out one more barrel or so.

I will start and see what I can do with VMAX's and NBT's. Ground hogs and such here at home. PDS and Jack-rabbits out in NM at my sisters place.

thanks to all. rch

I shot the attached two targets with 80 grain flat base bullets out of a stock Savage LRPV 12 twist 6BR at 200 yards at matches last Sunday and the Sunday before that during practice before the matches. I shot Fowlers in the past and they shot really well, as you say. When I ran out of those, I went to Berger PN 24321 until my 80s came in from Ronnie Cheek. The target two Sundays ago was shot with the last of my Cheek 80s. With over 3300 rounds on the gun, it turned in it's smallest ever 200 yard five shot group at .36". Last Sunday I was back to the Bergers. I pulled the first shot on the second group. When the other four went in one big hole I shot a fifth one to see if it would go in. It did. The Fowlers, Cheeks and Bergers all do great in this gun. What I can't figure out is why the groups are getting better at 3500 rounds on the gun! Those groups equate to 1s at 100 yards. That gun has brought home a lot of fake wood for me in factory class shoots over the last three years.

I've heard it said that a gun that comes in so to speak after a lot of rounds, is the throat has worn to the point seating depth is at the optimal point. But I don't know your loading process

That salvage is shooting better because it's just now worn the machine marks out of the barrel. Enjoy it while it lasts !
