Army, Marines getting away from brass case ammo.

I have a question, not about the case but the bullet selection. Why did the DOD go with the 6.8mm? There are not a lot of bullet choices in 6.8. There are lots more good choices in either 6.5 or 7.0.
.277 was determined to be the smallest diameter that would allow development of special purpose projectiles.
 
With the quantities the military would purchase they dont't care about the current selection of bullets. The final bullet selection is likely to be as different as the case.
 
Not sure if it has been mentioned but id be real concerned with environmental degradation of that case less or steel headed ammo.
Seems like it would be way too easy for moisture to do its damage.
