Arizona State Long Range Championship

Day one - Iron Agg: [br]
Phil Hayes - 599-36
Justin Skaret - 599-27
Ken Nelson - 595-33 [br]
Day One - F-Class Agg: [br]
Steven Shaw - 599-33
Steven Blair - 593-21
Allan Rosenthall - 589-22 [br]
Steve Shaw shot 200-10, 200-9 & 199-14 today with a .300 WSM. His 215 Berger Hybrids were smoking at 3050! A great score from Steve and the pace to beat in F-Class. [br]
Sorry, but F-Open and F-T/R were not broken out. The attached file has all results if it can be read after compression. Congratulations to all leaders and see you on the range in the morning.

Congrats on what you have done so far, Steve. And good shooting tomorrow.

I will be there sometime tomorrow to watch at least a part of the event.

The match is done and Steven Shaw (surprise!) won F-Class. He added another point to the spread today. Congratulations to Steve, his 599-33X was truly exceptional shooting. Steve Blair and Allan Rosenthall rounded out the top three. [br]
Steven Shaw - 1188-59X
Steven Blair - 1181-47X
Allan Rosenthall - 1175-46X [br]
Justin Skaret was match winner in the sling crowd, followed by Phil Hayes and Ken Nelson. Great shooting by all three. Take a look at how close the scores are. [br]
Justin Skaret - 1194-62X
Phil Hayes - 1192-62X
Ken Nelson - 1191-63X [br]
My photos are too crappy to post. As soon as results are available, I'll post a link.

Congrats on some fine shooting. And it was a real pleasure to meet you, Steve.

That 215 Hybrid at 3050 is stiff competition.

See that my old coach, Bob Jones, was having his issues. But, he doesn't shoot much like he once did. Also, somewhat surprising to see Charles Clark shooting from a rest. Am surprised that there were not more sling shooters.

Fear not, Charles still shoots sling. He told me that he wanted some variety and took up F-Open. There was a lower attendance this year in all categories. To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, "A falling tide lowers all boats." :(

X count is great and Steve's is impressive. But, what is more impressive to me is shooting 200, 200, 199 for 599 in three consecutive 1000 yard matches. I have never seen anyone else get close to that in F-Open. The best three match score I have ever shot is 199, 198, 199 for 596 and that pales compared to Steve's. He earned the win.

Thanks for that Steve. And thats some pretty exciting shooting as well. Can you tell us a little about your equipment? Rick does a nice write up.. Wish more match directors would do that. Adds a lil flare to the match report I think.

Skarret came out on top with a Palma rifle too.... Over the any rifle guys. Good shooting Msgt Skarret!!! We have a very talented Palma team indeed.

Rick would make a good baseball announcer. Anybody that can make paint drying sound exciting has talent. ;) [br]
My equipment is as follows: [br]

Manners F-Class stock
Jewell 2 oz.

Here's what it looked like at Twentynine Palms the day before the Arizona LR.

Yes, Rick can paint a picture of the days events like no other I have seen. Russ T asked me to describe my equipment I used to shoot the Championship match this weekend at Ben Avery for the SW Nationals. First of all, When Haven shot shot a 199 on the first relay of the first string Bill Berta asked me if I could beat that and I said I will try. I was surprised to shoot a 200 with 10X first string. The second string I did the same, keeping a poker face like it happens all the time. Of course Steven Blair was keeping a close eye on me and he was as surprised as I was. When I shot the 3rd string with a 199 and 14 X's I was beside myself. I had never shot a clean at 1,000 yards but shooting two in a row, I knew I was onto something. I found out that I had shot a range record of 599 out of 600 nevermind the X count... I was numb.
32" 5R Kreiger, Batt 10" mag action, McMillan BRF stock?, Jewell trigger, 12x42 N.F. BR scope and my own reamer I came up with last fall. I put as much weight on my cheek, hold the front of the stock down with my hand like shooting a shotgun with lots of force so my rifle gains about 30 more lbs. The weight of a rifle class is to limit the stability as far as I can see, so to get more weight, I lay on it front and rear. It does not move at all. I hear the work Elevation so much that it drives me crazy. You don't get elevation of you have your rifle glued to the ground, thus the score. Make your rifle weigh a ton, shoot freight train at laser speeds and use a light trigger and you only have to worry about the wind. With this set up, I never have to aim further out than either side of my 10 ring edge with the 215 hybrid doing around 3050. I never clean my rifle if it is shooting. I went 800 rounds without cleaning it. When I come home after shooting the 599, I cleaned it and lost 5 points right off the bat the next morning. I won't do that again. Don't fix it if it is not broke. Great match and Rick Curtis is a Great addition to the club as its broadcaster. His stories make you feel like you are there the way he uses words to paint a picture of the day. I didn't know about the ceremony after the shoot until Rick emailed me and said I should have stuck around. Well, now I know. Thanks Rick. See you at the Berger match.

That was, indeed, some great shooting, Steven. And thanks for all the info.

And by the way, Guys - he did all that while shooting from the wrong side. ;)

I'll be back on the 30th, Rick. As far as I know, Steve had still not decided. I believe that he will be at the Berger SW Nats, for sure.
