Area 419 headspace and ogive measurement kit

They are less Accurate…… Me with the Ugly
Reloading kit it was way more bang for my buck. SAC is nice if you can afford is as their machining / fit n finish is 2nd to none.
How are they less accurate? What is the test u have performed to come to this conclusion?
I would suggest that the variable is the quality of caliper u attach the gauge to. The gauge is an anodized aluminum piece that doesn’t change its dimension.

It was a typo…. I measure things for a living and calipers aren’t designed for measuring +- .001 lol. I’ve had great luck with my Hornady sets but when I bought the SAC setup I felt like I spent way too much so I got the UGLY setup which was way more bang for my buck. That’s all.

Thanks for the tip! I watched some youtube videos of the Ugly set and will be selling my Hornady set soon.

these are nothing more than a piece of metal with a hole drilled in. Furthermore they are a measuring aid used to make comparisons using calipers which would be where you want to spend your money on precision. It's hard to make that piece of metal any more precise than the other piece of metal with a hole drilled into it. The "hex nut" style with a series of holes drilled in it works as good as anything. It is also cheaper, and takes up less space on my reloading bench

it isn't as pretty but I really am not in this for pretty

You can take a drill press and a 1 inch hex nut or other piece of metal and make your own and it would be just as precise

We are talking about a whole kit that will measure headspace & ogive. Not one given item.

I have the ugly comparator set. Its nice although the Hornady one was as precise, only not so shiny.
One annoyance with the ugly was the small grub screws on the bushing holder. They also make a Hornady style bushing holder with a thumb screw. It available on Amazon here: https://a.co/d/3s4ADKb for 8 bucks… just select the ‘Single screw type bushing holder’.

its the same principle for both, you are measuring the axis using a hole to find a datum on slope. As long as the hole is constant you can do a comparison. A good set of numbered drill bits, a drill press and a 6 x 2 inch bar of 1 inch thick aluminum and you can make better than you can buy
If you want to pay for a name then go for it I say, myself I use the lowest price tool that will correctly do the job I require of it

Its not about buying a name. Not even close.

I guess if your sitting around with nothing to do and time isnt money than sure, make a set. As an owner of a company and having a family with kids, my time is worth WAY more than the few dollars it costs to just buy a set.

I literally purchased the most affordable kit that just so happens to have amazing quality. You can do whatever you like. I’m simply recommending a very high quality budget friendly kit. Make your own tools if you want to man!

The Ugly kit is a steal at $45; you get the bullet and case body comparators and a nice tin with good foam that is cut out. The Hornady you've got to buy two kits.
And none come with a storage case but ugly. With all the cartridge information needed on inside the lid!

I just use the Hornady set I bought 20 years ago. I did make a set about 10 years ago from a piece of scrap aluminum I had laying around my shop when I was mentoring a friend who was just starting to reload. Took me all of 15 minutes of time. I put the bullet ogives on one side, neck ogives on the other. I should have kept them and gave him my Hornady set. It was more convenient having everything on one tool, no parts to lose.

I don't have a full shop anymore but you guys got me to thinking, I may just order a aluminum square and make another
