Are drones for hunting like sonar for fishing

Well it depends on the culture you were raised in I guess.

Where I grew up, PA, it was considered a duty to shoot any dog that chases deer -immediately. And we did. I did.

I truly hope that you are not proud of that.

Around here, NC, they hunt deer from the road, after buddies have released 'deer dogs' on other side of a block of woods.. Where I grew up, PA, it was considered a duty to shoot any dog that chases deer -immediately. And we did. I did.

As bazaar(to me) is to see folks describe PD shooting as 'hunting'. IMO it might as well be a video game.

I cut my hunting teeth in PA and I remember the bit about the dogs.. I never saw one but heard them chasing deer. Feral cats fell in the same category. If seen, shoot to kill.
On another note, you can bet your paycheck that when the first videos showing hunters using drones appear on youtube, the peta/animal rights crowd will be all over them.

If someone shot my dog, I'd be getting free meals the rest of my life. ;)

I am saddened that hunting has become a sport. Man has always hunted for food. If you are not out there for the good natural meat then your in it for the wrong reason IMO.

Making poachers pay I would be ok with it might not be proud.

It's just the way it was.
One day my best friend's dog came home with a deer leg. A neighbor seen this & reminded my friend that he had seen deer running in the past week with his dog chasing behind. Murmuring soon ensued, like a witch hunt, and the next day my friend asked me to do the old yeller thing for him. I was 12, nearly a year before that my father had put down MY beloved companion due to a horrible tangle with a Porcupine. I asked him about this, and again he said "it's the only thing that can be done".
So I did it. My best friend cried, like I had, and I put a slug from my 410 into his dog's skull.

That was my first year of deer hunting. Within a few years I reached a content understanding that it was the right thing to do. A dog that chases deer continues to do so & it leads to cruel deaths for every deer the dog affects. Over & over.

I understand that here(NC) deer dogs are controlled, like bird dogs. So there is no real offense in it. I only bring up the contrast in it from the view of another culture.
A little more for you:
-We don't have to hunt for food.
-Hunting IS a sport.
-Safety, ethics, and sportsmanship are essential in hunting.

What about varmint hunting? People don't eat groundhogs (mostly) but hunters sure do shoot a lot of them.

And what about feral hogs in Texas. Some are eaten, but a lot are not. They are massively destructive to fields and crops. Ranchers hate them. They are shot not for food/meat, but rather because of the destruction they cause.

I plan on using one this summer for scouting groundhogs in some of the bigger fields we picked up at the end of last season.

We were hunting Cape buffalo in swamps and tall grass and the use of a drone was discussed. Following tracks through chest deep water for a week changes the opinion on such things.
We came up with a field expedient substitute, a long bamboo was cut and a cellphone attached using grass for ties. Video record was started, phone was lofted with the pole, slowly rotated and direction called out.
Due to wide angle lens it was hard to see anything, no buff because they are in grass too. But the birds who follow the buff could be seen.
Now if this had been done of the first day of the hunt rather than the afternoon of the last day I would have a trophy on my wall.

That may be true where you live but it is against the law in western NC

I gave up both hunting and fishing for that reason. I didn't enjoy eating the things I killed, so I stopped killing them.

What about having 10 guides scouting for you before the season and you drop a monster buck on opener? Is that hunting?

Considering a drone for hunting. Does this meet the standard of fair game hunting. If so what models are suited for hunting reconnaissance

You have got to be kidding.....you're kidding, right??

I'll say this on the matter of hunting, when I was first introduced to it by my grandfather it wasn't a sport... He - we didn't do it so we could "Smoke a monster" And I'll tell you something else we didn't do , we didn't high five each other and hoot and holler while we were back slapping each other over the animal we had just harvested .
That act in itself would have warranted a swift kick in the pants for being disrespectful.
The majority of people these days don't actually in the true sense of the word hunt , and they certainly don't respect the land their on or the game they pursue .

I agree with the position that if you are that lazy whereby you cannot stalk an animal and need some type of flying contraption to get you the Intel you need in order to harvest it then you should relegate your hunting endeavors to a video game ....
