Are bullets the wrong shape?

i have been looking into aerodynamics a little.. ..... snip.........
john

If what you say is true, I would say that you put too much emphasis on "a little".

Supersonic aerodynamics is not a simple subject, even though your particular premise is pretty easy to refute. Based on what I remember when I undertook my undergraduate studies in aerodynamics, we are NOT shooting our bullets backwards.

I'm pretty sure the laws of physics has not changed recently. But if you wanna' load them flat face forward, go right ahead. And while you're at it, please convince all my fellow competitors to do the same. I would appreciate it.

i have been looking into aerodynamics a little.. it would apear that external balistics wise we shoot bullets backwards...
i understand safty concerns with split cases n such but what about short teardrop shaped light weight varmint rounds that would take the presure relitavly evenly accros the tail.

I agree, why isn't the CG in front of the CP? Surely this would stabilize the bullet more and keep it pointing in its track.. It wouldn't be hard to do with a FMJ and lead in only the front point. Air gun pellets look like they have the CP behind the CG, and air guns have rifling.. Also, A plaswod (for internal ballistics) and a point at both ends (for external ballistics) would surely give a superior flight.

Warren Johnson says the most aerodynamic thing in the world is a raindrop.

Yah but remember raindrops are falling thru the air, being propelled by gravity alone, affected by whatever air currents they encounter in their path.

Having no particular need to reach a specific landing point, they're well-suited, design-wise, for their intended task.

I don't know who Warren Johnson is, but he's undeniably incorrect.

Looks like this post is about done so I will reply.

Well lets see about " recent developments in bullet design" b.t.'s were being used in the late 70's then went to f.b. and went full circle to b.t. mid to late 90's. Precision Shooing pretty well had stopped being a b.r. magazine by 1990 and went a different direction which it seems didn't really turn out to well. The only gage I have is bullet die sales and bt's are an easy 10/1 over flat base even though there seems to be more interest being generated lately. George

Earlier than that, French ball D ,8 mm Lebel.

So is this what your looking for, was digging around and found these from years ago....

Congratulations. Now we all know you knew that, unlike the chap who suggested "Kilmanjaro" early in this thread, and to whom my comment was directed. Gold star for M14AMU.

I have to wonder about that. Suppose he wore out four pairs a year, it'd take a quarter century to wear out one hundred.

PS I do find a claim that he wore out 24 pairs in one year, and that he walked an average of 73 miles per elephant killed. Almost beyond credible. These figures could well have been exaggerated down the decades, and would be impossible to verify. "Larger than life" seems apropos.

Hornady made their 168 gr .308 International Match bullet in the RBT style, and I have shot them with equal accuracy as the 168 SMKs of the day (early 80s). Of course, all my shooting was limited to the 300 yds at Knob Creek Range in Bullitt Co., KY, and I was simply shooting for groups from the bench. I still have that old Ruger tang-safety M77, albeit with a Douglas bbl installed; she really likes the 155, and 175 SMKs better now though.

Someone else loaded bullets backward. Kilmanjaro Bell. (sic) Killed a bunch of elephants with a 7mm Mauser.
I have his books and have read them numerous times. He used 175 gr. DWM factory ammo with solids in his 7X57. Not his exact quote but to paraphrase, "never did a soft point bullet, soil its perfect bore". Barlow
