AR15 scope mount options

I am not an AR15 guy, & a friend that I work with was asking if a pair of "Super High" or "Extra High" picatinny rings will work to mount a 30mm tube scope with a 50mm Objective lens on a flat top AR ?

If not, how about some recommendations for a strong yet lightweight (and reasonably priced) 1 piece cantilever style scope ring mount ? Thank You !

Either will work for a 50mm objective but the concern is, based on your friend's position behind the gun and cheekweld, will it be in-line with the eye relief line with the scope. For my position and cheekweld on mine, I require a height of 1.70 or higher. Fortunately, I have an adjustable cheek piece on the stock. You may find advertisement or documentation that suggests those two height categories will accommodate larger 56mm objectives but it still reverts back to the eye position comfort.

Straight up rings may not let you get the scope far enough forward. Most mounts made for ARs allow the front ring to be more forward than the front mounting slot (cantilever).
I've used straight up rings years ago, but my personal preference is the 2 piece Nikon P-Series.

I have had both the cantilever and regular high and extra high rings on flat top AR's. When I have both setups out prairie dog shooting, some shooters have noticed the cantilever mounted scopes fit better or seem easier to shoot with. I have slowly converted all but 1 upper over to cantilever, watching for another 1" on sale. I have Burris(heavy) Weaver(thumb screw needs loctite). Would like to try Warne.

AR ring height needs to be 1.4” to 1.5” for most of us to be comfortable.

I have a like new Armalite 30mm mount here somewhere also. I think its an EX0027.

Both are excellent and robust scope mounts.

Aero ultra lite mount works well, and not to expensive. I have used them many times on rifles. 1" and 30mm can be had.

I bought some cantilevers through the years and they do work good for moving the scope forward and having about the right height. I usually go cheap because I'm not competing with them. They are just for beater/work guns, although I have a couple of uppers for out to 500-600 or so.

I found that I could buy a good riser (not the chinese and stuff like UTG) and just add rings. There are different height risers and different height rings. Plus I can mount the riser forward on the receiver rail. My favorite is Yankee Hill Machine which I use with every day Weaver rings. Going that way gives me lots of options and I would probably not go back to using a dedicated mount. Pick the riser height and ring height and I'm good to go.

My small frame has a Bobro that 1.5” and it gives me right at 1/4” air gap between the base of my 50mm SHV F1 scope. One thing to consider is does he have a front sight?

Here is an example from yesterday.

My wife with her big glasses, shooting a stock Fulton FAR-15 223 Service rifle with the A2 front sight. Sight is not visible in the scope.

Leupold 8.5-25 x 50 scope and a A221 scope mount.

She is wearing out 10” steel plates out to 547 yards with store bought ammo. I just watch and coach. She dont listen!

1.5" is a good height for an AR.
I have a Nightforce A221, and it is very nice.
Also have an American Defense Manufacturing (ADM) with quick detach system (but have never removed it, but reviews say its very repeatable).

Larue Tactical has really nice mounts for a AR rifle..and pretty darn nice triggers as well.
And 1.4 to 1.5 is the right height.

White oak Armament has a forward riser rail. They also list different ring brands and heights to fine tune the position of the optic. Best solution I have found.
