I have used a small base die for many years on the military style semi autos (M1, M14, AR). You may do fine with a standard die but the small base die will not hurt anything and may save you some grief down the road.

I would measure them all then. Cull the ones that are obviously a lot bigger.

Hunting is not on your timetable; it demands you shoot when the situation is perfect not fumble with ammo that is problematic. Giving up a theoretical advantage of being easier on brass that may well be lost in the woods anyway does not make any sense. make your ammo idiot proof and use every advantage to be ready when the situation demands action. Small base dies only makes sense for you and your friend. Hunting ammo has always been function first all else latter.
