AR-308 barrel help

Saying you will shoot mostly suppressed didn't help at all. If you are going to shoot subsonic heavies you will need a fast twist and the length could be short cause it doesn't need length to make speed. If using a suppressor supersonic 168s or the like you would want a longer barrel and a 10-12 twist would be OK.

I second the proof research barrels. Cut rifled and awesome quality. They aren’t cheap, but you get what you pay for as the saying goes. My 6.5 Grendel barrel from them shoots sub MOA easily.

This is my AR-10 Armalite build with a McGowan 18" SS 1-10 twist 5R rifling mid length gas, adjustable block, muzzle is threaded 5/8x24. You just need to specify DPMs style or Armalite style. This was the break-in period group, with 150 production Rem bullets, a wet bore Sweet Shooter break-in. The 308s are heavy, compared to the AR-15s, this one AR-10 is a 308/260 deal. The 260 is a shooter in the .13 catagory. I have about a half dozen McGowan SS barreled guns they do shoot. Does not mean evervone shoots always, but mine do shoot. I just bought the barrels, have nothing to do with the company, but they are good to do business with, know what you need and what you want, right up front, you get what you order. According to the guys they mostly make DPMs style barrels.

Have at it then, whatever trips your trigger and shoots the best for you. Confidence in your equipment is paramount to your performance. :)

The general consensus of opinions on barrel life and performance is that stainless steel is superior to chrome moly steel. The bigger difference is the chrome line barrels by comparison. But the variance is how the barrels are shot. Often hot loads and longer runs will degrade any barrel/chamber no matter the construction or material.

Enjoy the search!

:)
yes but that is completely opposite of the facts. chrome moly out lives ss in like chamber/like use

I have an 18” stainless AR10 barrel from Rainier Arms which I like a lot. I also have a 22” one for an AR 6.5 Creedmoor. Regardless of the supplier I suggest getting the longest gas tube system you can for the barrel length you are buying, and get an adjustable gas block.

If your interested I have a brand new Rock Creek 308 barrel with gas block and tube. I bought a Seekins SP10 that came as a 308 and before a single round was ever shot through it I swapped it over to a 6.5 Creedmoor so I have this new unfired barrel complete with gas block and tube. Seekins used Rock Creek for their barrels on these.AR308barrel.PNG

how long and is this armalite config or ??
If I recall it's 18in but I can confirm that later when I get home. You'll have to excuse my ignorance on AR10's but I don't know what "armalite config" means. Not sure if this helps but this barrel came off what was a Seekins SP10 308 that I bought brand new and as soon as I got it home I pulled the barrel off and put a new Proof 6.5 Creedmoor barrel, gas block, and new gas tube on it. Proof barrel was their +2 so I had to use their longer tube and the journal size was different for the Proof barrel so I had to install a different gas block as well that's why that 308 barrel includes gas block and tube.

You prefer a button rifled barrel? I prefer single point cut and use Krieger and Lilja on mine. Just feel I get better accuracy from them and they are so much easier to clean.
Unless something has changed, Lilja barrels are button rifled, pulled button I believe, barrels, not single point cut like Krieger barrels.

The debate as to which is better will probably continue till the end of time. I have about equal amount of both, mostly Krieger and Hart but I've recently added a couple Bartlein, and can honestly say I'm not good enough to tell or shoot the difference and that's assuming there is one although all of my last 5-6 barrels have been single point cut not button rifled.
