AR-308 barrel help

hello everyone,

i'm building a ar 308 drm style rifle, trying to decide on a barrel, it will be run suppressed most of its life.
i've narrowed it down to these options
spikes tactical 18" chrome line cold hammer forged,
noveske 16" SS
JP supermatch 16 mid length
JP supermatch 18" rifle length
JP super match 20" rifle length
criterion hybrid mid length 16" chrome lined
does anyone have any suggestions or experience with any of these brands. also barrel length not sure how long i want to go, i plan on having a sandman S on the end of the barrel so i'm not sure if i want shorter 16" or longer 18" maybe even 20"

I haven't used any of the manufacturers in your choices. I use Bartlein #13 contour ordered in 21" lengths and make my own barrels. These can be adjusted for 20" lengths and shorter. I use stainless steel and have avoided chrome lined barrels forever.

If you want a factory barrel, Criterion would be a good choice in stainless @16" when using your suppressor (same one I use).

Enjoy!

:)

why don't you like chrome line? i feel like if i'm going stainless the JP supermatch would be better choice over the criterion.

Have at it then, whatever trips your trigger and shoots the best for you. Confidence in your equipment is paramount to your performance. :)

whats the durability of stainless barrels, how well do they hold up?

The general consensus of opinions on barrel life and performance is that stainless steel is superior to chrome moly steel. The bigger difference is the chrome line barrels by comparison. But the variance is how the barrels are shot. Often hot loads and longer runs will degrade any barrel/chamber no matter the construction or material.

Enjoy the search!

The process by which the barrel is chromed does not lend itself to the chrome being applied evenly throughout the length of the bore.

Chrome lining is chosen for it's lubricity, corrosion resistance, and durability.

do you have a barrel preference? manufacture, type?

White Oak does not do .308 AR barrels.

I might be able to save you some steps... I have a 20" M110 clone upper I would sell ( whole rifle if you need it. ) It has the Armalite Wilson Match chamber threaded with flash hider now but could hold a can.

I was thinking AR-15. :)

Wilson Combat too for 308.

I have a YHM barrel on my AR. I was looking for a melonite 9 twist 5.56 barrel.

well stick with a ss or cm bbl, NO CHROME LINED, NO WRAPPED BBLS.
chrome is for bbl life, not accuracy
no one in serious competition uses a wrapped bbl..they do not shot well as they heat up.
20 inch MIN, most of mine are 24.
melonite is a good thing
i have three ar10's all shoot well

You prefer a button rifled barrel? I prefer single point cut and use Krieger and Lilja on mine. Just feel I get better accuracy from them and they are so much easier to clean.
