AR 15 build advice

Thanks George, and thanks to everyone for trying to school me and steer me in the right direction. I was on the fence to begin with, and it took alot to get me there in the first place. lol I reckon the price point needed to end up with a gun that might be able to shoot MOA was what made me loose interest. Chasing tiny groups spoils you when you shoot, and a gun that's only capable of MOA doesn't have much appeal. As I said I may pick up something used locally if the need,or opportunity arises.

Fully Understood.

From the responders end,,,
When someone asks for advice on a home defense/anti tyranny piece but they also want it to shoot MOA with cheap ammo it's hard to deliver on good advice...

That's like saying I want to build or buy a vehicle that I can use in the Baja 500 and the Indy 500...
That would be Groovy but not at all realistic... lol

Or Imagine trying to defend your home and your family from intruders wanting to kill you all or simply take your 2A / Guns away with an FTR, F Open or Benchrest Rifle

At least you explained what you want near the start of your thread.

Cheers,
George

I got schooled a bit, but that's what I expected when making a post like this. As I said, I knew nothing about them really, and from what I hear they've lost appeal to me again .

Way off topic for the title / intent of this thread but,,

For your stated initial use of "home defense/anti tyranny" unless you live out in the sticks with nearest neighbors houses at least 100 - 200 yards away you would be much better served with handguns or purpose built shotguns. MOA accuracy does not matter one bit.

With an AR if you miss the intruder / jack booted thug while unloading 30 round mags it could penetrate your and your neighbors walls and harm or kill innocent people.

This has actually turned out to be a very good thread for the next person here that asks what to buy or build for a cheap but good AR15 to be directed to.

So I think the time has come that I feel I should own an AR. To be honest...I've kinda been opposed to the idea that I NEED one, but it's been on my mind as of late. A friend showed me one he recently built using PSA parts for like 400 bucks all in, and said he's very pleased with it. I know nothing about them, but like the idea of bargain shopping for parts over a period of time to put one together. I believe his qualifies as a pistol with a 13.5" bbl, but I would want a rifle, so 16" plus on the bbl.

I'm looking for some advice from seasoned AR owners/builders here on what parts to buy, and what to pass on when building a budget AR. I want economical parts, but not junk parts. I want common stuff that interchanges easily with another brand parts. Not really looking for recommendations on complete rifles at this time. All new to me, so....Perhaps there are specific sales from time to time I should be aware of?

I am sorry if anything i said discouraged you. AR's are fun. Fun to shoot and fun to build. I say go for it. Bulk ammo is cheap. I don't even bother to reload for the ones i still have. After building the first one you can mix and match and upgrade to your heart's content

Not at all... I asked, and I expected differing and like views just like any other topic. My ignorance of them and their capabilities had me expecting more than it turns out a cheap one is capable of. Many thanks to all for the advice, and if I go down that rd I can lean on this thread in the future.

For a shtf rifle it’s hard to build one as cheap as you can buy one from psa. Their hammer forged barrels are not bad. I have a double star upper on a lower I built for my general purpose ar. It will hold 1 1/2 moa with bulk ammo. Around moa with handloads though as cheap as ammo is I don’t load much for it. Have also built several precision ar’s. If you do build AR performance makes a nice melonite barrel that will shoot moa or less with good ammo for a very reasonable price.

Here is a nice little package that would be perfect for a home defense/anti tyranny piece for right around $400 plus the cost of whatever optic, red dot or laser sight one would want to put on it

As I stated above one wouldn't bring this to a Benchrest match just like one wouldn't use an F Class Rifle to defend themselves in urban areas.

As recommended wouldn't this be an SBR?

From PSA:
It is the customer's responsibility to be aware of all applicable laws and regulations regarding the purchase and ownership of uppers with a barrel length of less than 16". Federal NFA regulations are applicable to this item.

@grovey shortly after becoming a member here I scored a upper from classifieds with a 24" BHW barrel chambered in 6x45 $350
A month or so later I picked up a BCG and charging handle from midway $200
Local purchase on a Palmeto lower with mill spec trigger I believe $150
4×16 Vortex Diamond back of classifieds $200
Warne cantilever mount $100
I didn't get in a hurry to assemble bought components as I could afford them, in 9 months time I had a complete rifle, a hodge podge AR of sorts costing me $1000.
Just like you I want some resemblance of accuracy.
Here's the rifle15829035063714609162937778282204.jpghere's my primer test from 2 days ago, 5 shots per target round robin x2 for 10 shot test. I was pleasantly surprised by the 450s, as I initially built load using cci400, shooting 3 shot groups.
@DHuffman pointed me toward a trigger and JP Enterprises spring kit $80 for both to have a clean 3.5lbs vs my gritty 4.5 lbs currently in hopes of tameing the fliers.

You'll have fun and learn a few things along the way.
1 last thing, I freakin love my POF15 simply because of the piston operating system vs direct impingement. WAY CLEANER!!!!!
I run my piston operated rifle dry, where as my DI rifles are run wet.
