With all the love for the 7 saum, the 7prcw sure seems like it might be a good option for me. The 6.5 prc brass is likely to be widely available for many years to come with the Hornady machine backing it. A 180 at 2900 is pretty similar to the saum and other popular 7s.
I always knew the 7s have a great BC, from way back when 7mm08 was popular and 6.5 creed had yet to make every cartridge on earth obsolete, haha. This video came out the other day at just the right time. Holy smokes, the 7 crushes everything by drop. Not sure on wind, but they go together. Mark and sam seem fond of the 7s even at 2 miles for the casual plinker like me. I also have a 1022 that can dial to 630+ with subsonic ammo lol!
My area is ultra dry and I can easily clear off a large area to expose fine sediment like baby powder, so seeing a miss is easy. The one mile and 2 mile targets by my house are in natural barren spots, but I have cleared off the desert pavement in my other spots.

Just a bit slower than 7SAUM and basically identical to 280AI but that speed difference won’t hurt.
75ish mils of elevation for 2 miles is pretty impressive for 60ish grains of powder and mild recoil.
A Little, FYI as I Have, First hand "Eyeballs", on this, Subject ( Saw, the Garmin,.. myself ! ) w/ 24" Barrel,..

3,015 FPS ave w/ same Load ( Bullet, Pr's, Brass, etc. ) with, a Max load of, Ramshot GRAND powder.
I also Noticed that, I could Hear the "Splat" of, the Bullet on the Steel Plate, a BIT Louder at, 710 Yards than my, 130 gr Creed Bullets,.. Yup, the 7 PRC IS, the "Real Deal" IF, not going, Too Crazy at,.. "Extreme Long Ranges"

My sons 7 PRC is the Orig. Hornady design, Tikka action, 24" Proof Barreled, Carbon Fibered Stock,.. "Elk Rifle".
The 6.5 PRC Case, necked up to, take 7mm Bullets ( the 7-6.5 PRC ), Has Less Powder capacity ( and gets apx. 7 SAUM Velocities, I Believe ).
My son is Using around, 71 to 72 grains of, Powder with, the 180's.
The 6.5 PRC casing, holds, Way Less, Powder.
Alex designed, the 7-6.5 PRC for,.. F-Class shooting and 1,000 yard, "Accuracy",.. IIRC
The 7 SAUM, .284 Shehane / .284 Win. .300 WSM and the 7-6.5 PRC,..usually "Dominate", at those Ranges,..

Nice! I have 2 rebarreled tikkas myself and 2 varmints factory barrel. Think I will go all out on this one and get a Bat, Borden, ARC, or Defiance.
If, you Want to Shoot MORE than, 1 Mile,.. I'd Talk to, Alex W. and GET,.. His recommendation.

You probably Need, at LEAST, a Big .338 Norma Magnum of some sort, W / 300 grain,.. Boolits !

Looks Like, a .338 Lap Mag, 33 XC, .338 Norma Mag Improved, etc., launching 300 Grain Berger's, would be "Best" to get you, out to, 2 Miles and Keep, Ammo Price and RECOIL,.. "reasonable".
Talk to,.. Alex W., David Tubb, Ken at, BRUX Barrels, Frank at Bartlien and pick their Brains for "idea's".
Sam is very, Knowing and I get, the impression that, he likes SPEED, but wants to, AVOID, too Much, Blast / Recoil. There ARE Several Guys on HERE that, Shoot ELR ( Start asking Questions of, the Posters,.. HERE )

That's my understanding too. I know alex says 338 norma mag improved is the 6br of ELR. Still considering norma mag or lapua. Definitely considering having alex build the whole thing or at least the barreled action and set me up with dies. For just having fun, seems a 7 could be a lot of fun from 1k to crazy far. Dang just the scope stuff to add enough moa is a whole month of top ramen and PBR, haha.

The low recoil and blast has always been my thing too. Was big in shotgunning for a long time. I ended up with a big ole heavy 12 ga gas gun with a slow 7\8 oz load. I like 17 hornet, 204 ruger, and 6 creed too. I know this for sure. If I build a bigger gun, I will make it so heavy I will need a forklift to move it lol.

Oh yea, but there is no Free Lunch as the accompanying muzzle blast will make you no friends and perhaps not be allowed on range…
I would opt for a RAD system to tame recoil and anything on the muzzle involving a muzzle break would be a combo break/suppresser such as Area 419 makes.
As for the 1-2 mile events I believe that Mr Wheeler recommends the .338 Norma {No Belt} and at best I would think that per round cost will be in the $3.50 to $4.50 at least and as tariffs set in any “Imported brass {Lapua, Norma} and powder {Vit, Alliant, even Hodgen is made in Australia} the cost will only continue to rise…
I use a .280AI with 184 Bergers {$1.30@, primers 20 cents@, powder = 1 cent a grain, Peterson brass =$4.40@} not counting the brass, just over $2 a shot.
They will perform well out to a kilometre {.62 mile} and I imagine that they would just make the mile still supersonic… Just!
The .338 Norma in OZstralia would be in the $4-$6 a shot range….!
Stepping up and playing with the Mile+ crowd is going to cost $$$ if you want to be competitive… Don’t forget to set aside $4-6K for a scope for the rifle and another $2K for a quality spotting scope… Oh Yea, dies, press, powder scale, case trimmer, shooting mat, front & rear rests/bipod & squeeze bag.
As soon as you get into “competition” the old race car homily comes into play….

There is no competition or range. I have never been to a rifle range in my entire life, and I have no intention to ever go to one.
The topic is not "what is the best cartridge for ELR competition". That's easy to answer. The cartridges being used by the top competitors at king of 1 mile and 2 miles is an easy list to google. Just use one of the ones the champions are winning with.
The topic is how much do various cartridges capable of ELR cost per round.

My 7mm easily got to 2 miles hard part is spotting.
My 338 is definitely easier to spot impacts and misses.
The only reason I’m building a 375 is spotting.
Have a lot of experience with 338 Norma, it’s no hot rod but I found it pretty easy to load for.
The improved is even better.
My son's, 8.7 Pound, L-R "Elk Rifle", is nicely "Tamed" by, the Newly designed, 4 Port, PVA "Jet Blast", Brake.
Personally I'd Like, a Big .338 Round with, a 28 to 32 inch Barrel ( .850 - .900 Dia. Barrel min. ) and a 5 Port Brake, weighing, 12.5 lbs / 13lbs min. to 16.5 pounds, Max,.. that should be, fairly easy to "Control" and Accurate with, 300 gr Bullets.
If, too Heavy, you will probably, Get TIRED of,.. "Lugging" it, around !
