Applying moly to the barrel

Starting out with a new barrel. I recall hearing moly is more effective if applied to the barrel as well as the bullets. How would you recommend treating the barrel? Just a molyed patch or two?

It is generally not recommended to use moly or coated bullets before firing at least 100 rounds of uncoated bullets through your new barrel. Use one of the barrel break-in techniques of firing one to five rounds and then cleaning all copper fouling before firing the next series of shots. Some folks shoot one round and clean for the first ten rounds, then fire five rounds and clean for another twenty or so shots. The barrel is broken in when copper fouling drops off significantly. For a custom hand lapped barrel this happens quickly. Main thing is to allow the barrel to cool between shots, overheating a new barrel before it seasons is not recommended. Then before using moly or coated bullets the barrel should be striped of all copper fouling until no blue shows on a patch. Then run a patch with Windex, alcohol, carburetor cleaner, etc through the bore and dry with a clean patch. Next grease up a patch with moly grease, I use high pressure/temperature wheel bearing grease because its cheap and easy to find, you can purchase moly bore cream. Run the patch through the bore several times and follow with clean patches until no grease remains. Use a cleaning rod guide and make sure no grease is in the chamber. The moly will bond to the clean steel. Then shoot the moly coated bullets.
