Moly Bullets IN Short BR

Moly Bullets

Moly bullets don't seem as popular as they were 10 years ago in short range BR. They never seemed to add or take away from shooting good groups. Several records have been set using them especially by my bud Dick Howell. I have never used moly bullets so I take the word of those that use them. What I have heard is the build up or ridge that that can happen if moly is not controlled. My feeling is the build up of moly in the barrel happens way after the effective accuracy of a BR barrel so moly does not impair the grouping ability of a BR barrel.
So why are moly bullets seen less are or the diehards still using them. Could be moly is a dead issue and those that choose to use them do.
Any comments. Discussion would be appreciated.

Stephen, I believe that this is a "tastes great/less filling" issue. Since the craze began, I have stayed with MC bullets for probably 99% of my "record" shots: I do not believe that, in a BR capable rifle, there is any potential/measurable gain in precision; I do believe that the use of moly extends useful barrel life. The problems here revolve around the necessarily SMALL sample that any individual experiences - how do I know that my last barrel would not have gone 6800 rounds with bare bullets? We simply lack enough scientifically collected data to provide a statistically valid assurance that ANYTHING we do is much better than a coin-flip. Good shootin'. The largely overlooked LAPUA data was about the best available . . . R.G.

Tubbs shoots moly, I shoot moly enough said :)

On a serious note, BR people are trying to elimanate variables. Also I kid with them that they love to clean their rifles. Part of their routine.

During the NE regionals I did notice the guy I was scoring for would clean his rifle and it would take 3-5 shots to rezero to the same POI at 1k.

This was a Kreiger barrel too. At first he didn't know what to do adjust adjust adjust. Finally he just let 4 sighters rip and low and behold the center of the target was his.

I never cleaned my rifle in the 3 days because I shoot moly. While people were going to the benches and placing their buckets under the barrels I was enjoying a drink and talking with fellow shooters.

People talked about how much cleaning they were going to do that night. I went to the bar and watched TV.

I don't think moly makes a match rifle more accurate, factory it might because it will fill in the rough bore. I don't even care if I don't get more rounds down the tube.

I am just lazy and would rather shoot my rifle than clean it! Some people have some elaborate rituals for cleaning. I swear sometime I am going to see a naked native american dancing around rifle as the owner cleans the bejesus out of it!

RHINOUT!

I've shot nothing but the 67.7 and 67.2 grain BIB bullets in the Borden TPE since I got it..I'm just about ready to start my second 1000 and the barrel after looking at it in with a bore scope looks the same as the day I go it...I've only ever cleaned it with Kroil and a little bit a JB and once or twice a year some "TM"...I also use it in all my hunting rifles from 22/250 to .338 mag,,I'll never shoot an uncoated bullet again..too many people see the black and get scared off..clean less and shoot more..moly and danzac are all right in my book...

How did you do the barrel breaking in with moly bullets??
Was it still shoot one clean, x10 shoot 3 clean x10 or is if different with moly?

Considering shooting moly only in the 6 BR I'm having built and am wondering how to break in the barrel.

How do you know when a moly shot barrel is clean??

thanks

P, I'm pretty much a hillbilly - though it isn't supposed to work this way, I just start off shooting Moly and have never regretted doing so. For the most part, I believe that [so called] barrel break-in is merely wearing the burr off the trailing edge of the land - trailing edge with regards to the reamer coming off the land/throat. So, a few bare bullets sure won't hurt. Good shootin'! R.G.
