Anyone used the Leupold VX-6 7-42?

Hey everyone,

I'm in the market for a new long range target scope and really like my Leupolds in general. I am strongly considering the 7-42 VX6 except, no one seems to have it? It's been out for a year now, and apparently they had some problems with the first run, as there was one guy who posted on like 6 different websites (willbas on sniperforums) who had a lot of trouble. But since then I've pretty much seen nothing. No reviews of any kind that I can find this year, and for such a powerful new scope from such a huge company I honestly am really surprised. What gives?

that is me, I had a shooter next to me this past weekend with one and he has not had any problems with it. I loved till it broke the part that got me upset was the very slow service from Leupold. It sat on there receiving dock for two weeks. Then a month later I got it back still broke. If they had fixed the first time I still would be using it.

Jsulli I'm the other guy that hasn't had any problem with his. It is very repeatable, I have gone from one rifle to another one, and all I had to do was go back to the same numbers from 100 to a 1000 yards. I only had it part of the year, like July1st of last year and only worked with it till September. the glass is great, like the Parallax. But any Scope that will repeat from one rifle another and still be on the money is worth the money! Anything else let me know. OH almost forgot Won H.G. score at the World Open in PA. after only having it a week or so.

Customer had one and it seemed nice went out and shot with it over an Olympic arms 22-250 and it was a pleasure.

Thanks for the replies all- Good to hear people are (mostly) happy with it. I guess Ill go empty the couch cushions and see if I can get one ordered.

I actually won one at the 2015 Berger SWN this year. I run Nightforce NXS's on my guns but had always been interested in this scope since it came out, I just was not willing to spend the money for something I didn't actually need at the time. Let me say I love my NF's, but the first day I brought this scope out of the box and compared it to my NF I was throughly impressed. The glass is top of the line and I hate to say it but it is clearer than my NXS 8-32 and to me that says a lot. So after debating over the next few days on if I was going to keep it or trade it for another NF my wife convinced me to at least mount it up and try it out at the next match. Before I did I had to get a sunshade for it, that required a phone call to Leupold, well it turns out that the 3in shade was still coming out of the prototyping phase and wasn't readily available through distributors yet. A few had been sent out for trial but you couldn't order one anywhere. During the phone call I explained my situation and how I acquired the scope, Josh was super nice and we talked about the parallax problem that (Wilbas) had, Josh quickly asked me for the serial number on the scope and asked if it had AA at the end of it, which it did. Josh was quick to say they did have a problem with initial production scopes (someone was putting the spring into the parallax knob backwards) but the serial numbers that end with AA are the scopes after the problem was rectified. After that question was answered we spoke a few minutes about the scope in general and I asked about the sun-shade, he put me on hold to go see if he could put his hands on one and get permission to release it to me. He came back and explained the situation and said he did manage to mark one for me and that he would send it out next day. And then he said let me know how you like the scope. I asked if he wanted my credit card info, I received a shocking reply "No, just let us know how you like the scope" and "good luck at the match" WOW, now thats customer service. Leupold will always have my business from this point forward.

About the Scope: I have used it 4 times so far, 2 range sessions and 1 2-day match. I first performed Bryan Litz Tall Target Test and the scope produced a correction factor of .8. Which for this test is satisfactory for elevation tracking. Anything over 1 has to be accounted for in any ballistic app or you will come up being off target. Next I did a box test, the scope tracked perfectly. Next was a eye chart test, it out scored my NXS on all lines and resolved the target for 7 min longer at dusk. At the match I let a few of the guys that run NF Comp's look through it and they all came off the gun with a smile. I asked if they thought it was better or worse and each said "well its defiantly not worse" one guy said "if its not better it is just as good" So, I will be keeping the scope and after looking through a few NF Comps my self I can say that I am very happy with the Leupold and its worth what they cost, in my opinion.

Well I'm going to have to get mine out of the safe and check the serial number some time today! Thank GOD no problems yet, but it will get a workout this year.

This is the first I've seen about this scope. I may have to get one myself. I have a (3)- 6.5x20 with a VH crosshairs, and just wondering how it would compare to it, if even at all. It's got me wondering.....

Well at first I wasn't sure, almost on the verge of disliking it but after I shot for two days at the last regional match I came to love it. It seems to allow me to see my aiming point more precisely and it is supper easy to hold off .5 MOA with it quickly and get that shot off in your condition.

What do you guys think of the reticle being empty in the center, does it make shooting in mirage any easier?

I'm with you in that I would want to try the reticle before spending the money. The reticle is right up there with clarity on my list of factors for purchasing a particular scope. At a retail of about 2500 bucks, it is disappointing Leupold does not offer more reticle choices and zero stop should be standard. I sold off my 8-25 Leupolds because of no zero stop. I can't be the only person that buys NF because zero stop is available.

As for the Zero Stop. You have to decide what you are going to be using this scope for. If you are running tactical type matches then you would be better suited to have zero stops but if you are using it for benchrest or F-Class type shooting then zero stops are not needed. I mean you set your scope at the known distance once on the line and you might make a half minute adjustment either way so you can see where a zero stop feature wouldn't help any here. The scope does have a Zero Set feature which allows you to zero your scope at your preferred distance and then loosen the turret and turn it to zero if you wanted to. I got lucky with my Dasher and a 20MOA rail, when I bottom the scope all the way out and on zero it just happens to be spot on for 100 yards. Also this scope was designed for F-Class specifically, the USA F-Class team helped Leupold develop the scope and reticle, they also had much input on how it should work and the reason behind the specific reticle. Just food for thought. Oh and you can get this scope for less than MSRP, unless your a "window sticker is quicker" kinda guy!

I'm sure they can be had for less than MSRP. I just used that $ figure to illustrate these are not low cost scopes. Regardless what they were made for, persons like myself want zero stop for our intended use. To me, Leupold is missing a lot of market share by not making zero stop at least optional. I must say that I liked the glass better on my Leupy's than my NF NXS's.

Very valid points, and maybe they will come out with a high mag variable power scope with Zero Stops and un capped turrets. They sure would open their selves up to a lot more market share. I wanted the OP to realize that this was a pretty specific scope for a specific need and he needs to figure out what he wanted to use it for. I think out of your points made and the others on here that he gets a pretty good picture.

So in using a 20moa base, you still get a 100yd zero in the crosshair.?? I am wanting to put one on my 22BR with a 200yd zero. I'm thinking I won't need a 20moa base for no father than I plane to shoot. I might get a 10 moa base, just to be sure. Who knows what I would put it on next.

You could consider looking at Signature Z rings with inserts. 0 to 20 moa adjustable....No ring marks left on the scope.....Just a thought.. 8)

Get the 20MOA base. I have 10 of them and they all zero up at 100 yards with 8 different Leupold scopes.

I cannot wait to try a new 7-42. Looks awesome.

Gabe, yes . With a 20MOA base I have a zero at 100. But do understand the turret is fully bottomed out, my last click ends on zero and just happens to be my exact zero for 100 yards. I can't go below this point on my turret but I don't need to either. I keep all my guns/scopes on 300 yard zeros.
