Any thoughts on the NF 15-55 competition scope vs Leupold vx-6 7-42

i have had both the Leupold VX-6 7-42X56 and the Vortex Golden Eagle.. Both are great scopes.. but i will take the Vortex over the Leupold. I found that the VX-6 to be just too big with that 34MM tube and to think about it, with that size tube, you would think that there would be more MOA of movement than what is there.. Also, i felt that the VX-6 had just a tad too much eye relief.. and could actually push you out of your natural LOP. Plus, i feel that the Vortex is brighter at 55 power over the VX-6 at 42 power. But they both have lack of distortion and or aberration in the lenses to my eye.

Ive had both for a couple years, here are my thoughts.

Pluses for Competition
-better turrets, great zero stop
-clearest and brightest
-amazing customer service

Pluses for VX6
-34mm tube gives great field of view. I find this very helpful for watching various conditions. Be it flags spread further apart or what have you. Lets you zoom in further but still maintain a wider view of conditions. Also increases ability to see misses. All of these have been major advantages for me. 34mm tube plus 42x magnification is amazing.
- maginification range allows it to be used in about any discipline. Hunting, PRS, F class, BR

Minuses for Competition
-none really but if it had a 34mm tube it would be the worlds perfect scope :)
-15x lowest power may limit its usefulness to BR or F class

Minuses for VX6
-turrets are not very solid and don't give a feeling of confidence in the unit.
-i Have several of these and I have had to send two in. Thats ok with me but Leupolds reps did not seem very knowledgable and I had to send one back a second time because it was not fixed correctly.

Just a few thoughts from someone using both.

-edited for something I forgot

That's a great comparison from someone using both, but I'm perplexed about a couple of things.

Comparing the Leupold VX6 7-42X56 with the Nightforce Competition 15-55X52, you mention that one of the pluses about the Leupold is that it provides a great field of view but it also let's you zoom in further but still maintain a wider view. How could you zoom in further when the top end is 42X and the NF is 55X?

I'm not sure that the wider tube provides a larger FOV by itself, the FOV is more dictated by the size of the inner tube than the main tube diameter. Are you sure that you were comparing the two scopes FOV at the same magnification setting or were you just using comparing at max power for both?

Reason I'm asking is that the Nightforce BR 12-42X56 has the FOV at 42X pretty similar to the FOV of the Leupold at 42X; within 3 feet at 100 yards. I would suggest that trying to see conditions at 42X is probably not as revealing as using a spotting scope at much reduced magnification, but then again, what do I know?

Anyway, good post. Thanks for the info.

Have not owned the Comp model from Nightforce, but having owned the Leupold and now owning the Vortex Golden Eagle.. i would say that give the GE a chance before making a final decision.. i am not trying to sway you.. but one factor of the Leup is the weight and size vs the amount of movement you get.. not near as much as i would expect for a 34mm tube.. i liked mine.. but i like the GE better! And i felt that the Leup was dark at 42X whereas for the Vortex.. is better at 55X.. though i keep mine at 35X

I meant that it let's me zoom in further and still see my flags because of the wider view. I rarely go past 40x on either of them and I'm usually at less so I can see more of what's going on.

My left eye is nearly blind so it's hard for me to have spotter set up for the off eye like some do.
