Anyone Shot At The 1K Range In Rawlins, WY?

I'm trying to get some general info & experiences shooting (non-competition) at the 1K range in Rawlins, WY.

I live in northern CO. A buddy and I are considering heading up there. The guy I spoke with there said 1/ during the week it's not very crowded and 2/ he thought there wouldn't be an issue of us using our ShotMarker there....but he sort of had a "I'm not totally sure." reaction.

Can anyone who has been there pass along any experiences or words of wisdom to someone who hasn't? Did you have someone in the pit or did you use something like a ShotMarker? How busy is that range during the week vs the weekends?

Thanks!

Jim

If that don't pan out there is a 1000yd place here. It's on BLM land, dry lake bed. I see guys drive out hang a target, shoot and drive back out. No pit.

There are no pits at Rawlins. E-targets are the only practical way to go for 1K. They have set up a mounting system but they do not use the Shot Marker System. You could put your Shot Marker at 1K on the ground, as I doubt your target would mount on their target holders. There is room on the right side to do that. I honestly do not know if they allow open shooting on that range, however. You could drive all that way and not be able to use the range. Hopefully someone will chime in with more information before you drive up. I also don't have a contact number, but it is owned by the City of Rawlins and their website may have a number you can call. It's a nice range but the wind can be very challenging. Good luck.

Northern Colorado, I'd ck out the Otto Rd Range outside of Cheyenne. Private range but only $85 per year. 1000 plus yards, really nice folks. Never been crowded when I use to go there. I'm guessing they would let you set up a shot marker. I brought my own stuff to set up, never a problem.

Colorado Rifle Club in Byers might be just as close to you as Rawlings. 1000 yd range with pits and Shot Marker can be put up. Membership is probably 2x the Rawlings price but their range covers 2500 acres and offers just about every shooting sport there is - with excellent facilities.

Thanks for the responses.

We've been going to Raton (Whittington Center) to get on a 1K, so finding something in Rawlins is a real positive. But Cheyenne or Byers is even better.

Not sure how things will pan out. I've got an email into the Otto Rd club in Cheyenne.

Thanks again.

I wondered! I used to live in GR and we shot at a dry lakebed south of RS. Is the manhole lid still there?

Laramie has a 1K range but I don’t know if it’s open for daily fees. They do have a web site, so worth a check. I shot at Laramie two weeks ago and they have both steel and standard target frames for NRA competition. You might also check with Ken Lankford @ Wyo Rifle and Pistol Association. I shot with him when I was back home.

The data in the responses in this thread have been extremely helpful. I'm really chuckling at myself - at how badly I was in "tunnel vision" mode......

My friend has been going to the Whittington Center outside Raton, NM for many years. He showed it to me and we've been going there a couple of times a year for the last 4-5 years. Naturally we do all sorts of things while there - but the 1K has *really* grabbed our interest and we've been pretty involved in that for a while.

While we knew about the club in Byers, it was more than we wanted for a "2nd club home". We've been operating under the (very bad assumption) we had to drive 4+ hours to get to Raton if we want to be on 1K.

In addition to Byers and Rawlins, thanks to this thread, we now know of *3* 1K ranges we didn't know of previously - all of which are closer than the Whittington Center is. It has been a good reminder to me to open my eyes a bit and have a look around.

The folks in this forum are so helpful. Thanks!
