Anyone shooting a .300 Savage?

Picked up an old but nice model 99 in .300 Savage. It’s a nostalgia thing. I’m mostly a varmint hunter but this rig might be fun to use on deer-sized game.

Since this gun will only be fed factory loads, I am pleased by how many factory ammo offerings there are for this obsolete (but still great) cartridge. Are there any I should try first?

I have a Savage 99 that was handed down from my grand father to my father and then to me. It has taken many deer and bear from up north in Canada. I know my Dad used Remington in it. I reload my own

Mine has been in the family since 1950s. Remington 150 grain Core-Lokts work best as a factory load, I also use 150 gr Core-Lokts when I reload. After having trouble with Federal Factory Ammo and Federal telling me the gun was unsafe and had excessive headspace I rented headspace gages and the rifle checks out fine. With Federal factory ammo the velocity was 200 fps off the Remington, accuracy was poor and primers were pushed out.

Two of my friends were horse trading for a 99 on the job one day, my friend Danny finally bought it or traded some think for it. He told me that the magazine was jam packed when he got it home an looked. Took a lot of work to empty it. Danny said the guy that sold it must have been playing with his dads rifle when he was a kid and loaded the rotary magazine with crayons and they had melted over the years. I knew the seller pretty well he might not have been a kid when he did it, he was sharp as a bowling ball.

I remember one day in high school a friend came to me and showed me a beautifully mushroomed bullet. I said where did you get it? From the bull I killed this weekend! Cool. It was from a 300 Savage 180gr Rem cor-lokt

Reload that thing with some 150-165 Sierra Game Kings. My dad had one in a 99, I don't remember the exact load but I do know it was IMR 4064 under a165gr Sierra and that thing shot really well.

I have an old Remington 722 that I killed my first deer with in 1975.It's hardly an ideal varmint round, but I learned to shoot using it on groundhogs.I couldn't afford a scope for it back then,so I got pretty good with it using the factory iron sights. The longest shot I made on a groundhog was about 200 yards.Last fall I ran across a set of loading dies for 300 Savage at a pawn shop for $25 and got a wild hair and decided to hunt with it,but I had no brass or bullets.I did have 100 pieces of the old Remington BR 308 brass that's soft and good to form cases with.I wondered what would happen if I ran some through the full length resizing die,so I lubed one up and tried it.An utterly perfect 300 Savage case came out and all I had to do was trim it to the proper length. It shot great with 150 grain Hornady soft points. It's a great little cartridge.

I have a 1951 99 in .300sav..got it in a trade...shipmate wanted a .54 ml and he traded off his dad's old rifle...I pulled the scope and installed a marbles tang sight...due to my friend/ shipmates passing ,we never got to hunt togather but did fish the rogue a few times... memories

I might have a set of dies for a 300 savage if you plan to reload for it. Let me know. You can have them.

I've had a few.over the years, a couple 99s and a 722 all did their duty in northern MN and WI with180gr RNs they were perfect for the job.
