Don't need a full kit, just need a rod that is slightly less than 30mm to lap rings. Thx

I use wooden dowels for lapping scope rings. Use some care to find one straight enough. You can get an 8 foot long 1 1/8" dowel at your local Home Depot for around eleven bucks. That's 28.6mm in diameter.

Surely there is a 2 foot section somewhere along the length which you can use. Dope it up with valve grinding compound in various grits and you're good to go.

You're joking right?

Wheeler Engineering is about the most affordable you will find and they are very good quality. Should be able to find just the 30mm set on ebay or amazon. I would recommend getting the entire Wheeler kit. Comes with the torque wrench, 1" and 30mm rods, dovetail ring alignment tools, threadlocker, lapping bar handle, multi tip screwdriver, lapping compound and instructions. It's everything you'll ever need and you'll never be left wishing you had another piece of the kit later on when dealing with a different scope.

Weaver makes a 30mm only kit as well, but i havent used it so can't attest to its quality.

There are also some custom lapping rods you can find if you search around on the internet.

Definitely want steel. Please don't use wood ;)

Your ignorance is showing.

I would love to compare the runout on concentricity of your wooden dowel vs my steel lapping rod. The dowel probably gets lapped into a more concentric piece of wood by the scope rings more than the other way around.

But to each his own I guess. Use what you will. At least you're not using it on my scope rings so I can't really complain ;)

Just go to your friendly NAPA store and get some plastic gauge . Two strips on the each ring and slightly tighten . It will show .001
It works for checking head space also .

Great idea Larry. You posted while I was posting, so I didn't see it until now.
