Anyone live in or near Laramie WY ?

Reason for asking - I’m planning my first trip on 23 of September. I’m going with a friend that goes every year to the same place. Not going to hunt other than a few dogs if we find them - but just to visit and see the country and ride around. Laramie, medicine bow and a few other towns are on the list but I’ll be riding with my bud as a tag along. Just thought if anyone lives close i could wave when we drive by and if anyone has suggestions for a place to eat or see or a hot spot for prairie dogs then I’m open for info. Also any suggestions on do and do nots while out there. I understand no license required to shoot the dogs and you need to know where you are welcome to shoot dogs and where you shouldn’t be - was planning on my buddy for that but still - last thing i want to do is cause trouble ! Thanks for any suggestions or info

I live ~ 80 miles southeast of Laramie, so I can't be of much help on most of what you ask. No license necessary in WY to shoot PD's. I don't get up that way too often, but I don't recall seeing any PD towns. Laramie is 7100 ft elevation, and that is getting a bit high for dogs due to the terrain change. Very pretty countryside and a nice time of the year to visit. Expect about anything on weather, and usually wind. I tend to see way more dogs on the eastern portion of WY.

I am close by Wyoming standards. 200 miles west in Rock Springs. What I know about that area is there is not much public land. I would get a map app so you can tell who's land you might be on.

Fellas i appreciate all the responses. I do plan on an app - just not sure which app. Reviews are not a lot of help. Is it a bad idea to get one for your phone or i could imagine no signals out in middle of nowhere. Any suggestions on something other than cell phone for the purpose of knowing where your at ?

I would recommend a visit to the "Virginian" in Madison Bow.
There was a railroad museum there also neat.
Also there was a "Trampus" bar there also, this name comes from the book character.

Not from WY but have been thru Laramie and on up thru Medicine Bow to a big ranch called Q Creek. They have had some of the best PD shooting I ever experienced but haven't been in about 5 years. Trouble is they also do a fair amount of big game hunting there and I believe you will be in the area around archery season. That may place havoc on getting permission to PD shoot any where in the area. Also, I don't think it's the kind of operation where you just drop in and ask.

Definitely wouldn’t drop in and ask - even on public land i would hate to mess a fellas bow hunting up. There is a couple local people that my buddy goes to visit every year but the reason i ask is - several have passed away where the good spots are or were at. Mike is my friends name and he says we will find a few to plink at. He’s gone every year for the last 20yrs. Just trying to plan ahead because mike isn’t even taking a rifle . I want to at least warm the barrel up - if i don’t get into a mess of them it will still be ok - Still looking forward to seeing it.

Some people like Onyx hunt. Myself I use an app called 'Back Country Navigator" Has a one time fee. I also purchased the land ownership app overlay. It shows what land is what. BLM, private, NFS, State. Doesn't tell ya who owns it but you know where you are at. I save maps on my phone so I can recall them when I am out of service.

Thumbs up for Q-Creek. I've shot the Niteforce ELR match up there a few times.
Never poked at the dogs though. Lots of em on the ranch. Get ahold of Tad. I think it's a pay to play up there. It's a big ass ranch!
Free stuff would be about an hour south east of Laramie on public lands. Drive through the Snowy River range to Saratoga. Absolutely beautiful drive. Bring a Fly Rod too!

If you are going to drive through the Snowy Range to Saratoga check out the Old Corral and Steakhouse in Centennial. About 30 miles west of Laramie. A nice place to stay and great steaks.

Larime has an awesome mexican place. I always stop at the West Larime Fly Store. It's nothing major but worth a quick stop.
The old federal prison in Rawlins is absolultely worth an hour of your time for a tour. Been there 3 times and the tour guides are great and if you ever wondered what it would be like to be in prison.... yikes.
Douglas is a little way north but thats the home of the jackalope. Its been a few years but there was a restaurant there, Plains Trading post?, that I believe has been open since forever.
Ole's Big Game Steakhouse in Paxton Nebraska is worth a stop depending on hou younqre travling.

A couple years ago we were driving back east on I-80 near Rawlins and a PD ran up onto the highway. Never made it back off alive I don't believe. Saw it floppin around in my rear view mirror.
