Anyone like racing?

I love those older cars, in those days you could almost compete out of pocket so to speak. Yet another sport turned into a rich mans sport. My all time favorite was watching Mario Andretti run his last race in Pennsylvania in his home town where my father was born which is Nazereth . My all time favorite is Drag Racing.

Southland Dragstrip opened in Houma, La. New Ramada Inn close to our neighborhood. Parking lot the night before the big races had all the greats there. All our Hot Wheels cars real live in person. Mongoose, Snake, Gene Snow, i cant remember all of them.
Hey kid, help us push this one back up on the trailer, yes sir!
68? 69? 70?
Paul Candies Leonard Hughes car was local. Garaged near a friends house. We would go peek at the car thru the shop windows.
Never got to see a race.
Good ole days!

I have a thing for racing/track driving and this Lotus 2-Eleven was the best of my days.

Ernest Hemingway said, "There are only three sports, bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering, all the rest are merely games.

Liked it so much at one time I had my own race car, slung dirt for years, and was a rabid NASCAR fan, literally planned the weekend around racing, I could tell you who drove for who and who was wrenching on the car. Talladega was a twice a year pilgrimage and I traveled all over to see races, but I have lost my love for NASCAR, too many rules changes that I just don't care for, I haven't watched a race in several years.

I used to street race a lot when I was younger, but it got too expensive when you figured parts breakage and the occasional fine into the mix. Anymore I still enjoy drag racing, rally cars and some road course racing. NASCAR was a hoot when it was pretty much "run whacha brung", I quit watching that when the restrictor plates went on. Although I did watch a re-run of an older NASCAR race with my grandson a couple of weeks back. Open wheel racing except for the outlaw sprints has no interest for me. Some motorcycle racing is still enjoyable, flat trackers, drag bikes especially the Nitro Harley class.

My wife is the bigger race fan of the two of us. Like Daddymac, we traveled many miles to many different states to watch races. NASCAR lost us when they started the "playoff" format. That and Mark Martin retiring. You would think with all the empty seats every Sunday they, NASCAR, would figure it out. Guess they are too busy being "Politically Correct".
As a kid in the late 60's, I got to go to the drag races at Amarillo Dragway on a regular basis. Swamp Rat, Red Barron, TV Tommy Ivo, seems like all the fuel guys had cool nicknames. I watched the first funny car that made a pass at that track. Hurst Hemi Under Glass, Little Red wagon and several other "wheel stand" cars. Tons of memory's. 200 MPH....Sunday!!!! Be There!!!
We still go to Route 66 Speedway, (dirt track) a few times in the summer and I watch IMSA on TV. Rest of it has pretty much lost me.
