Anyone Know Much About ( Old Shotguns ) (PICS. ADDED )

A friend of mine brought over this old 12 ga. shotgun. It is a single barrel breakdown type. It has no markings on it anywhere. Just the words THE HUNTER on the side and that is all except for a serial number under the forearm and under the back where the shell goes in. It looks like a old H&R except it has a switch on the side to release the barrel and take it off after you take the screw out of the forearm and take it off. I can send pics to any one who has a idea who makes this gun. We would like to know more about it. Like who made it and when and its value. Thanks to anyone who can help.

In the earlier days of the 1900's the English made seemingly 100,000's of thousands of cheap guns for private labeling, like hardware stores, montgomerey wards and the like. Do you know what gage it is?

Could be

Here is some more info from google
First look on the bottom of the barrel for any proof marks (I doubt you'll find any). The gun is most likely a "Trade Brand Name" shotgun. That is a shotgun made by a major maker (and before 1940) for and was sold by a wholesaler or retailer who chose the name to go on the gun. Guns with the name HUNTER were made by either Crescent Fire Arms Company or Hunter Arms Company for and were sold by the Belknap Hardware Company of Louisville,KY A Crescent made gun will have a serial number stamped on the lower tang just behind the trigger guard. That serial number will tell when the gun was made. Value? The value will depend on the guns condition, the amount of original finish remaining on the metal and wood as well as the mechanical condition. Values can range as high as $150 for a rime condition example to less than $10 for a rusty rotten incomplete piece of junk fit only as a fire place poker.

I want to thank everyone for their reply and help trying to solve where this gun came from and when. Thanks Again. Rus

If it were a stevens or any other major brand it would have a name somewhere on it.This is one of those private labeled guns that were ordered in Chicago or new York and all you had to do was put your name on it.Its like this, you wrote them and said you wanted the gun to be a wild game getter and they would stamp a name in it and the serial number would be inline with the amount you purchased at the time.

We have looked at alot of pics of single barrel shotguns. But none have the barrel lock lever on the lower right front of the reciever like you can see in the top two pics. We can't find any one who will claim to have made it. I have contacted H & R , New England Arms, L C Smith and others and they are all as confused as we are. WHAT IS SO FUNNY about this ?
