Anyone know a gunsmith who isnt booked out till the next ice age?

Aha ! So that means the bullet wont be aimed down the center of the bore!!! The chamber would have to be awfully crooked to deflect primer that much in such a short distance?

I'd bet on the threads in the action before the barrel. But it's still possible. Off center hits also look farther of then they are. I had a custom action that was hitting .006 from center. It looked real bad. Ended up being the receiver threads. They replaced it but .006 looked like a mile. I guess that's why peep sights work so well. Our eyes can pick up very small errors when centering in a circle.

That looks pretty normal for a factory Remington. When you add up all of the variables, ie bolt clearance, action threads off center with bolt way, case head clearance, firing pinhole of enter, etc, that is what you get.

bushing the firing pin hole and getting the clearance right sure won’t hurt anything, and will cure the cratering.

Cratering with a sloppy firing pin fit is not a good indication of pressure. From the amount of outside radius still te singing on the primer, you are not in any kind of high pressure situation..

That looks like most stock 700's I've worked with....it's a long way from being over pressure.

While I don't think you'll see any big accuracy improvements, correcting it makes a lot of sense. :)

Good shootin'. -Al

I think I should reiterate that I have a 7# field rifle and not a benchrest or LR special. It has a 22in ultramatch medium contour Shilen and will be used to shoot critters. It is pillar bedded into a H-S and has a tuned trigger. I got it on a trade with a forum member and he said it shot .25 all day long with factory Lapua. SO if I have a hunt rifle that shoots straight and dosent produce ugly primers then I'm happy.

Jerry received my bolt yesterday and we had a nice chat. He said to not be concerned over primer strike as this is typical of 700 actions and not typically the barrel to receiver fitment. He has won more than one championship using off center primer mod 700 actions!

ps: he did mention that bushing the bolt wont usually fix the off center but will fix the obvious. he said has seen some where the cratering actually makes harder bolt lift with the material stuck inside the rim and this eventually erodes out the firing pin hole.

I should be back in business shortly and will report back.

Got my bolt back from Gerry today! Sure looks nice! I test fired 4 primed cases on the right compared to 4 on the left pre-fix. Hard to tell but does look like centering improved. Will post some fired with a load once I get some loaded up and back fm range.3588C7CB-F9E5-4188-929C-5A59C88748B3.jpeg6E8A17AD-CC7A-45C0-90E3-DEB90A114746.jpeg

Centering is definitely better. The original slop under tremendous pressure experienced during firing will enhance deflection. As Alex mentioned, the natural position may be very close, but if you add in the clearance available around the pin on a sloppy bolt, you will ultimately see a near-maximum deflection condition.

Yippee! made up some quick loads and headed to my range. No need for chopsaw or new receiver or barrel! or other horrible possibilities mentioned.. My analysis = sloppy firing pin hole

Now you can use mo powder.

I did that !! and need some help from you guys who have 6br range time as I have zero.

Working on a hunting load for 85 Sierra BTHP. I have a 22in Shilen ultra match bbl.

I am jumping .02 off the kiss and using unfired cases, 450m and .001 tension for load development.

I tried Varget ( think better for heavier bullets) and H322 and IMR3031. Looking for speed + accuracy combo. I couldnt get Varget or 322 to shoot better than .4 in. Some of it could have been me. And then yesterday I tried 3031. Sierra manual v5 has MAX at 29.3g at 2950 in a 26in bbl. I got 2900 with the 22in bbl and primers/base looked fine. So I snuck up a little to 29.7, +0.4 grain over their max, and bingo! found the sweet spot. 4 shots in .18. It felt right too. And I'm up to 2950 with SD of 10, ES of 24. I also got a SD of 1, ES of 3, with 4 shots at 29.5 but with 2 one holers, 1/2 inch apart. Weird?

Bolt lift normal and I could feel a bit more recoil with the over book loads.

I measured the web above extractor groove perpendicular with my flat jaw mic. New brass is 4685. Under max loads 1x with plump mushroom primers are 4695 and for the rest shot at or around max or over +.4g are 4700. This seems acceptable.

What ya all think? I am perplexed because in the pic attached the bottom right case shows light ejector mark but it has the plumpest primer. Never witnessed this before. Function of small flash hole and thick skinned primer so last to show pressure, instead of typically the first?

Pics of the +.4 gr over max case bases:

They look fine to me. Sounds like you found a good load.
what about the ejector mark? also when I resized a couple of the cases in the pic it was noticeably harder, esp with my hand press. I assume I am just looking at reduced case life.
