Anyone else getting shorted with lapua brass?

I had this happen a few years ago with 6.5x284. I just mentioned it to Kevin one time. He took my name and address, then immediately mailed me 5 cases. I was only short 2!

Hi guys, I'm the communications director for Nammo, and you guys talking about us came up in a search. Just wanted to mention that Lapua has been part of Nammo since we were founded in 1998 (when all the Nordic ammunition businesses were joined) so nothing new there. So far all our commercial work in the US has gone through third party distributors (which is why you have been asked to contact them) but we are setting up our own distribution center now, so that is about to change. Appreciate you letting our people know when something is off - good feedback for our QC!

Regards,

Endre Lunde

I just processed three boxes of Lapua 6mm BR Norma brass. Exactly 300 cases; however, the necks were badly bent on four of them.

I would bet that batches of cases are weighed, not counted. Processes like this are usually calibrated to err on the side of having more, not less, than the stated amount. It seems that all of my boxes have had one extra.
Sounds like a machine lost calibration and some batches got out before it was discovered. They most likely use statiscal process control and depending on the sample interval this could happen. Funny that no one complains about getting 1 to 10 extra, but let it be short by 1......

I bet you will just let someone like Graffs or Brownells know about this, rather than dog the company here, you will be more than fairly compensated.

You sir are a much better man than I am... I must just be cynical. I too assumed they fill the boxes by weight. You think machine calibration and I assume brass that is a inconsistent weight.

I hope you are correct

I'm glad Kevin took care of you and you are happy but even if Kevin sends me a couple brass (I emailed him last night) I will never use them to replace my missing one. I will not mix lot numbers of brass.

Wow I thought I was just me. I was short one 308 case on a box I got last week. Not a big deal to me. If it happens consistently it would be an issue for me.

So what's the short answer here Matthew? I have the cases sitting here on my desk, already addressed to you and ready to go out in today's mail. But now you're saying you won't use them if I send them? Do you want me to send them or not? Entirely your call, but we will always make a shortage or a defect right for the customer.

Steve, just need the mailing info and I'll be happy to get some on the way to you. Never a problem. Just PM me with the info, or you can email me directly at kthomas@nammoinc.com. I may even have some sitting on my desk right now that I just need to change a label on.

Please send them, I paid for them. I will use them for fowling shots or if a black bird lands in front of me.

Why do you question the quality of the brass because a machine weighed out 99 pcs wrong? Jeez sir, people make mistakes and sorting machines make mistakes.
All human systems are imperfect.

If we expect flawless quality, that comes at an enormous price. I've spent a lot of time learning, teaching and applying operational quality theory (Six Sigma and TQM) and most people don't realize the size of the price tag associated with a 'zero defects' policy. Lapua brass is expensive because it is consistent and tough. It would be twice the cost if the market insists on a zero defects policy across the entire the value chain. Defects are why all companies have customer service organizations - they are usually cheaper than trying to implement a zero defect policy. Even Rolex has a customer service organization.

Exceptions to the rule? Sure. Many companies and some entire industries spend a fortune on fixing stuff that would be less expensive to avoid in the first place but, generally speaking, a zero defect policy is not economically practical.

I don't weigh every Lapua case, but I do weigh a sampling. So far they have been very consistent. People make errors, machines get off calibration. All machines have tolerances. The speedometer in your car has an acceptable variance (if I remember correctly it is +/- 3 mph) and is probably not correct. Check out the speedometer in a police car, they are verified accurate.

A company that loses the confidence of its customers in the firearms business will have a hard time staying in business. For that reason alone, i would contact the manufacturer or their representative and give them a chance before dogging the company. Most companies do care about their reputation and will try to please a reasonable customer. From what I have seen and heard, Nammo wants satisfied customers. I don't know about others, but I do know they have one!

FWIW

We're talking commercial counting scales here, folks, and the pieces being counted are not particularly small. It's hard to imagine a +/- 1% error being acceptable in counting brass cases.

Ok, here's where I get blasted by a couple of you. You're anal to an extreme. 1 freaking pc of brass and you go insane. What, 80 cents or less and the world comes unglued? Now tell me all about the 'principle' of it all. And lot numbers????? See sentence number 2 above.
