Anyone build a semi-custom Ruger American Gen II?

I bought a NIB Ruger Gen II in 223Rem. Just curious if anyone has built a custom off it?

Sorry I put this in the wrong forum. Mods can move it if they want.

I'm curious as well, and would like to know how well your 223 shoots. My gen1 223 wasn't all that great, about 1.5MOA on a good day.

Well, mine is new and I'm still working on a load. But it hasn't overly impressed me yet. It doesn't shoot bad but there is lots of room for improvement. My first few times out was with rounds loaded for other rifles. Some groups were decent and some......not so decent. I hate to pass judgement on it yet as it only has about 40 rounds through it. Hoping it will settle down and shoot better than it is right now. For a budget gun it actually is pretty nice. Spiral fluted barrel w/break, ceracote and a smooth action. Horrible trigger but I fixed that and the nice looking but flimsy stock are about the main negatives. Of course the AR style mag hinders the OAL on bullets seating and I'm not crazy about that but I just deal with it. I'm kinda anal about groups. I like bullet holes that touch each other. Not sure if this little Ruger as it is will ever get there. But I love a challenge.

Respectfully. I can't see this Ruger in the same conversation with custom
..
Perhaps it should be referred to as "customized"(end quote)?
I have limited experience with them, but I don't see any reason why a Savage would be wildly better.
It has lots of potential, but I would keep financial investment, and expectations, moderate.

I built a 6x45 on a RAR Gen 1 a couple years ago. I had the pencil OEM barrel in 223, it would group good one day, and not the next trip. Aftermarket stock and barrel fixed everything except for the small ejection port which slows down single feed loading with longer AOL rounds.

Howdy !

I liked the 3-lug bolt on the one I inspected @ a pawn shop. You can get a version of these guns w/ an adjustable trigger. Great price, too.

A pre-fit barrel for these can be had, in a variety of chamberings.

After-market / custom stock is another option.

Sounds " custom " to me.

I'm going to be please if I can get minute of coyote/pig accurate without spending much more than I have in it now. I will say the action on the Gen II is better (smoother) than expected on a budget rifle.

Well, I can't leave well enough alone so I ordered a new stock. The factory stock is junk and I truly believe this is part of my accuracy issues. Seems any pressure on the fore-end will send bullets right of the bull by a lot. Off my Wichita rest squeezing my rear bag my shots were centered. Light pressure on the fore-end and I mean light, sent the POI 4 inchs right. I re-centered my scope and POI was centered again. Then squeezed the rear bag and sent the POI left. On a bipod and gripping the stock in the grip area, I can move the fore-end enough to make the barrel contact either side of the stock.
Going cheap as possible and still hoping for a better quality stock, I ordered an MDT Field stock. Reviews were pretty good and with a 10% discount and free shipping it came in just under $300. Trying to keep weight down, the MDT weighs 3.1 pounds. I want to use this as a "varmints of opportunity" rifle. Hopefully the new stock will tighten up the groups a little.

I make prefit nut barrels for those. LOTS of customers like them. They shoot just fine with a good barrel.

Same shank as the Tikka.

That being said, start with a Rem 700 footprint something for a build. Much more upgradeable.

I did some more shooting with the little Ruger. H4895 and Varget really made an accuracy difference with H4895 shooting groups in the high .3's and Varget just a little bigger but both very respectable for a "budget: rifle. The new stock came and the fit was perfect but haven't made it to the range yet. I went with an MDT Field stock.

Gen 1 RAP here, 6.5 grendel, ar15 mag style.
I put it in a Heakseeker chassis, 6 pos. carbine stock.
Shoots small groups w 85 to 95 g bullets.
I'd do the same if i had a gen 2 ruger. The chassis made a big difference.

I have a Howa mini in 6.5 Grendel. Its in an Oryx chassis. It shoots really well also. The Field stock added a coupe of pounds to the Ruger. I can't say it improved the groups but it didn't hurt them. Its a new rifle and I'm going through load work with it but a 53 grain SMK seems to be a good bullet for accuracy. H4895 and Varget seems to be the powder. Been considering a Jard trigger but also waiting to see what Timney comes up with.
