anyone a mauser fan?

just thinking of picking up an old FN made in belgium mauser action to tinker with. I just wanted to know if anyone knew much about them or even what one would be worth? the one I have found is actually a sporter action chambered in 308. I just thought about making a nice hunting rifle with it. any comments or suggestions appreciated.

I do a bit of work, complete rifles, on the mausers. If it is a good and clean FN, buy it, you won't regret it. If you don't, let me know so I can.

Commercial FN actions sell for anywhere from a VERY low $300 up to & over $600. They are very good quality actions and will take a lot of grief without endangering the shooter. Very safe action. Slower lock time than a Rem 700 or Savage but they make excellent hunting rifles. I've got a gun safe full of mausers from mini's to mags. Jard makes an excellent replacement trigger for them. Tubbs makes an improved lock time replacent firing pin & spring as well. You'll like it. Barrel thread is 1.100 x 12 TPI x 60 degree.

Mauser actions are very nice and probably the easiest to rebarrel since the bolt counter bore is machined into the action, leaving very little to do to the threaded tenon. In my own personal opinion, the claw style extractor is just classy, but the only drawback is that you can't close the bolt on a round already in the chamber because of the claw. Other than that, they are very nice indeed.

I have an F/N mauser chambered in .308 -- the complete bolt gun -- which was built probably in the late 60s. At its heart is a beautiful, very well made example of a commercial Mauser action and the rifle is a sub-MOA tack driver. If yours is chambered in .308, then you have a barreled action, yes? Hey, if you can pick it up for reasonable, go for it. If you don't want it, let me know because I do! :P

JS,
Actually, the newer commercial actions can be single shot loaded. The older extractors can also be modified as well. Not hard to do.

I kinda thought that about the commercial actions, but wasn't quite sure. I had one once, but being a lefty, I had little use for it, so I sold it to my friend in NC who is a died in the wool Mauser nut. I wish I could find a decent left handed Mauser type action. They're out there, but hard to find.
