Recently was told about the pellets for barrel cleaning and wanted to explore the good, bad, and/or ugly concerning them. The brands I have been able to look at so far are VFG, TIPTON, and BARREL BUDDY PELLETS. Anybody using either of them here on the site and care to pour some knowledge on the subject ?

I use the VFG pellets. I like the way they fit and work. I don’t like the price of them though. They say you can clean them after you use them but I throw them away, not worth the time. I think there are 2 types of the VFG. One with regular felt and a super intensive. I have only used the regular felt. I put JB on it and it works great. You have to have their jag and their (pellets) are caliber specific. Read the reviews on the Tipton and others before you buy them. I thought there were some threads posted on here before about the pellets.
Here is a link to them on Brownells. There is a video on there showing the use of J,Kroil, and the pellets.

I use the regular VFG pellets whenever I use an abrasive such as JB or Iosso. I don’t like to use abrasives often but when I do the pellets work great. For me they are just too expensive to use all the time for regular cleaning. Patches and bronze brush work just fine for normal carbon deposits as long as you clean often and don’t let the stuff build up.

Bill, I use the VGF and feel they work very well for me. I use a little penetrating oil on the felt pellets with some ISSO paste to remove some stubborn carbon.

Bill, Here are some of the past topics I found on the pellets.

I tried Tipton for my 7x57. They said they were for 284..... they were so loose in the barrel it contacted almost nothing. Was a total waste of 14 bucks. Maybe they will work on a 6mm barrel. Anyway, I wouldn't bother. I'd rather just wrap a patch around a jag PH style.

Love the VFG pellets for cleaning and they also work great for going at a carbon ring with JB Bore Paste. They are a little pricy but very convenient.

Also, be careful if your using their intensive cleaning pellets. They seem to shed metal slivers that love to stick into your fingertips. I would not buy those again.

I've used both types of VFG pellets and tried Tipton also. VFG are definitely the best, I am not impressed with Tipton's version. I mostly use them with JB or Iosso, but I do periodically use the ones with the brass in for cleaning my 22RF comp rifles.

I've been using the VFG pellets every time I clean for a couple of years... the intensive pellets with JB borepaste has worked especially well scrubbing the throat area, but I have not tried it with iosso. I tried the Tipton and thought they were significantly inferior.

I've been using the VFG regular felt and super intensive pellets in .22 cal. and .243 cal. for years and really like them a lot.

Because of their price and availability, I don't use them every time I clean though.
