Anybody ever had a Powder Explosion?

@DLT, @LVLAaron, @Kracken McGraw, Did anyone notice heat associated with your bad powder? After reading some past issues of powder going bad, I periodically scan my powder stash with a FLIR camera and check all of the previously opened containers for strong smells or red dust.

The only issues that I’ve had was the infamous red dust in some metal cans of IMR 4227 and 4064 that I picked up at an estate sales.

Knowing that I had one pound of 4166, I figured this would be a good day to check my powder. Mine was previously unopened. The label and seals looked fine. After opening, there was no strong smells or discoloration. I haven’t decided what to do with it yet, but it won’t be in my house or truck…..lol

I didn’t detect any heat by just my touch. But my bad bottles had the rancid smell and the greenish gold dust coming off like Aaron’s video.

Mine was definitely warm when I waved my hand over the top of the bottle. A flir is something I have always wanted and honestly I'm surprised I don't already have one.

Yea, the FLIR comes in handy for sure. Work paid for mine since I use it for property inspections. This is the one I have.

Ya, certainly looks like it could have been some form of flashoff on it, I don't understand all the chemistry stuff behind it, who knows what chems are involved altogether and how some things react to whatever they react to. I tossed some partials when I moved 3 yrs ago, and a few I knew I'd never use. Only ever had to toss maybe 3-4 lbs of powder over the years, one was an IMR4320 that was on a recall, too fast, I'd used some of it, min load was a max load and a bit. One was an unopened can of IMR4350 that had rust in it when I poured it into a glass measuring cup. I've got some RL22 I'm keeping an eye on, think maybe it was that which was stinky, but, haven't seen anything to confirm anything wrong with it, yet, shot some since, no issues with it, it wasn't stinky when I opened it, couple VV powders that came with it, nothing showing as obvious on them either. And I've got 4831 surplus still, 35 yr old WW760, AA9 I bought in 92, IMR 4064 in tin cans, RL19 that is from about 91/92, all good to go.

The times I handled mine I didn’t. But by the looks of my bottle it had to get hot and I don’t mean got hot from being in the sun but from a chemical reaction

I came across a rock outcrop that was small enough to walk around so I decided to check it out. On the opposite side was a shallow cave and back in on the corner was a military ammo box. When I picked it up something rattled around and I noticed a bottom corner of the box had rusted out. It took some serious effort to get that ammo box open and when I did I found dynamite and primer cord. The dynamite had broken down and caused the corrosion in the box. I knew this stuff was unstable and lucky nothing happened. When looking at my map there was an old mine down the hill from me. I assumed that and the ammo box were connected.

I called the authorities and gave them legal map location and hoped they could find it. Never heard back. Anyway that's my powder/almost explosion story.
