Anybody ever had a Powder Explosion?

This is my powder explosion experience. Years ago I used to hang out at Jarrett Rifles after buying one of his early guns. I shot a a lot there and ended up with a .257 AI. It was a great rifle but I had Kenny swap the barrel out to a 280 AI and I was shooting some 130gr Speedy Gonzles bullets. So, Kenny and I put a canister of FFFG black powder on the 100 yard target frame. Then we ushered a friend out and told him we were testing a new bullet for deer hunting. I shot the can and it didn't explode with a bang, but more of and eruption of flame with a soft boom - caught the grass on fire. Our friend just stood there with his mouth open. It was priceless.... if you were there.

Kmart, I saw your post and my heart goes out to you. What a nightmare, I hope you’re getting through it ok. My deepest condolences.

I’ll be checking my stash for 4166, I know I have a couple pounds of enduron, just can’t remember what. When they discontinued the Enduron powders it didn’t make sense to me, I don’t shoot them but a lot of guys were using it after a lot of marketing and hype. Hopefully this risk is limited to 4166 and to a limited number of lots and other Enduron powders aren’t at risk. DLT, good on you for sharing your experience, it’s easy to see multiple people are affected.

edit; one lonely can found. New and unopened. I’ll get rid of it

I will not be tossing any powder, unless there is a recall on that powder lot. Or others signs of a problem.

There are many double based powders containing nitroglycerin, that can be made to detonate. And only 1 that i know of that doesnt need to be contained. A electric spark was used to set it off. Can be the *equivalent of C4.

Keep powder stored at 60-70F degrees, and all should be ok? I hope.

Key word “should”

Sounds like this is a crowd sourced recall. No unheard of within the history of consumer goods.

I work in the automotive industry and recalls are always a calculated formula based on cost vs liability. Not a good idea to trust a for profit company to ensure a consumers safety especially with many first hand examples of products that are unsafe. For those that do only ever trust official recalls, I hope they live alone and do not make that choice that would impact everyone else living with them.

The more people that contact Hogdon the better.
That being said, I'd bet their first response is that the powder wasn't stored properly.
Get all the details you can on how it is/was stored a don't throw the empty jugs away (they can be analyzed).

I couldn't find anything in the safety warnings about disposal in the bed of your truck being a proper disposal site. So maybe don't do that anymore.
I’m going to bet that a powder that hasn’t gone bad probably wouldn’t have created a fire ball. Do I think it would be smart, No. Do I think it would have built up pressure and popped the lid, yes. I guess it would be a good experiment to conduct if I had time to watch it and a powder I didn’t care about

Mine looks fine, smells fine, container was opened previously by the way. But I don’t trust it, I’ll error on the side caution. I’m in Arizona, powder is stored in a climate controlled room. I’ll dispose of it.
I have an open jug from the same lot number and it displays nothing abnormal as described in previous thread posts.

Regarding storage, one can only account for the environmental conditions since they took possession. What the product was exposed to prior to that point in time are, and will likely remain, unknown.

Has anyone contacted Hodgdon and received a reply? It would seem unlikely as there is verbiage on the container stating that (and I paraphrase) “the contents should be inspected on a regular basis for signs of deterioration and that no warranties, expressed or implied, regarding fitness for use are made.”
