Anybody applying for sheep/goat/moose in Colorado?

Spencerhenry nailed it. (I am a life long Colorado resident) Ever since they merged the Parks dept. with the wildlife dept. the hunters have taken it in the shorts. Colorado parks do not even come close to paying for themselves. The cost of upkeep is just too high to pay for by camping permits and the like, so they gouge the hunters and fishermen to make up the extra. One of my friends was saying that this year it is going to cost him $70 just to put his little fishing boat on the water. Sad.

I got my regulations brochure today. Colorado has outdone itself.
Everything went up, fishing license and small game are up $8. Deer, elk, bear, and antelope are all up as well. All applicants now have to buy a hunting license like turkey or small game before they can apply.
Residents now have to pay $50 for a point for sheep, goat, and moose, as well as the application fee of $7, plus a $10 habitat stamp, as well as the required small game or turkey license. And the cost of the license went up $50. So now if it takes you 10 years to draw a moose license, you have $450 in point fees, $70 in application fees, $15 education fund fee, search and rescue fee of $2.50 plus the $300 tag. And that assumes you already were going to buy a small game and your habitat stamp. That makes a moose tag, even a cow tag, cost $837.50 if you draw it in 10 years and they don't raise the fees again during that 10 years! That's not that much different than a non-resident moose license in Alaska!

A non-resident now has to spend $80 on a small game license, $10 habitat stamp, $100 point fee each year, $9 application fee, as well as the education and search and rescue fund. For a tag sheep, goat or moose tag that costs a $2212.

I personally will not apply for moose again, its just not worth it. I will also not apply for sheep. I will apply for goat this year as I have the points to draw it this year, after that I will not apply for goat again.

I question whether or not the people that decided on these fee increases have any understanding of capitalism and economics.

I bet they've done some homework and determined that they'll make more money this way. I wouldn't be surprised if a large number of folks just pay up (or don't even notice) because it's a drop in the hat compared to the other expenses they plan for when going hunting.

Bad hunts, as discussed above, will have a far more chilling effect on revenue in my opinion, and they simply aren't helping the game populations enough to fix what's going on. My circle is small, but between my buddies and around the forums, I haven't heard of someone having a great hunt in Colorado in 5 years or maybe more. That's really sad.

Unfortunately more and more of the western states are really soaking it to the non resident applicants, because they can.

These are the figures on last years applications for Goat, Moose and Sheep in Colorado. I do not have the breakdown between resident and non-resident.

Animal Quota Applications

I will let the hand wringers do the math.

Post 2 has a attachment of the Co (Little California) rules. I do like page 7 "ILLEGAL SMALL-GAME HUNTING METHODS" rule 8

It is illegal to promote, conduct, offer to conduct or
Participate in a competitive event that involves killing
small game or furbearers for which there is no bag and
possession limit (including coyotes and prairie dogs).
Contests are allowed if no more than 5 of each species
are killed by each participant during the event. Contests
of marked or tagged small game and game birds
for money or valuable prizes also are illegal. Tokens
of recognition without significant monetary value are
not considered valuable prizes. This does not apply to
wildlife parks and field trials licensed by CPW.

This one rule shows how much Co sucks.

Thank you for typing all that out. I did not have it in me but you are spot on. Now consider all you wrote based on 10 years but with no actual ending as I have applied for both sheep and goat for 15 years and not drawn. It's a scam, plain and simple. The scam is over for this hunter as I will hunt elsewhere and other countries. Cali-rado can rely on the rich folks theory or the dope smoker theory to make their money. Good riddance.

I’ve read recently that New Mexico is trying to ban coyote hunting contests now too.
